45 Minutes in Verdun
[previous] :: [next]On Wednesday, I had some time to kill between classes. I was faced with a decision: study, or explore. I chose the latter. I jumped on the Metro and got off at the Verdun station. These pictures are all taken within a few blocks radius of the station and obviously don't reflect the entire borough. Rue Verdun facing north. Skyscrapers from downtown can be seen in the background. Random street shots from on or off rue Verdun.
Some stairs are friends... ...and others dont't get along so well The rest just line up and wait to be climbed. A playground with children playing. Rue Wellington, another commercial Street one block up from rue Verdun, is adorned with big yellow flowers for the entire stretch I saw. What was probably a very beautiful theatre is now a convenience store. Some local graf in an empty lot. Rare vinyl siding on not one but two houses. Holy front lawns Batman! This architectural style pops up every once and awhile in Montreal. I could very much do without it. I was very surprised to find a very urban part of the city degenerate into suburbs in the distance of a mere block. Birds.

Peter: 2nd Oct 2006 - 13:47 GMTthose spiral staircases! so cool. they always get me. and yeah, i hate that 60s-style permastone architecture too. my grandma lives in a house like that, heh. Sirhcbre: 3rd Oct 2006 - 00:10 GMTIt's a shame that it's now apparently illegal to build walkup apartment buildings but fire/safety code prohibits it. I have seen a few new buildings with staircases though, particularly in the areas being gentrified. I'm not sure what loophole they're using but it's happening. Matt: 15th Oct 2006 - 21:48 GMTyou know its quite odd to see verdun this many years later, the only things that have changed are the newer models of cars on the street. you could put older cars in those pics and it look just as it did years ago. does this make any sense? keep it up..awesome site! ZailDark: 2nd Feb 2007 - 19:29 GMTVery cool, my grandfather lives just around there so I've been to all of those places. It's cool seeing it all again, the last time I was tehre was a few years ago so I didn't have a good camera at the time. Nice to see, brings back memorys. EL: 18th Oct 2007 - 22:44 GMTYou should see Verdun in December, every porch and staircase glimmering with lights. Gorgeous. Good shopping on Wellinton Street too. Marlene: 20th Oct 2007 - 19:38 GMTMontreal is the best the city in Canada....and it wouldn't be any good without Verdun. Kenneth Maki: 11th Feb 2008 - 16:01 GMTimage 16177 the pastachio green place was where I lived at 272 rue Rielle Long timeVerdunois: 12th Feb 2008 - 00:49 GMTGood to see pics of Verdun, Montreal is not all Ste.Catherine St. you know. T: 5th Apr 2008 - 23:05 GMTLove the shots, brings back wonderful memories. I used to go to the elementary school across from the Verdun Metro. Montrealbunny: 19th Apr 2008 - 22:13 GMTHa! Ha! When I moved to Montreal I specifically looked for a home without those stairs. They appear precarious at the best of times, but have you tried climbing them in 4" heels? And the thought of snow on them in winter...aaggh!! I guess you have to be born here to successfully navigate them. That being said, your pictures are beautiful and I will be sure to make a trip to the Verdun metro this summer. colavitos ghost: 20th Apr 2008 - 13:23 GMTif those "suburbs" are only a block away from a "very urban part" of town, they can't realistically be called "suburbs" then, can they? for me, a "suburb" is much more than just a style of residential housing. Genevieve: 6th Jun 2008 - 13:45 GMTIndeed, that building housing the Uniprix was once home to the Savoy theatre. Good eye. Juanita: 24th Jun 2008 - 04:59 GMTWhat great pictures. Takes me back to my youth = 1926 to 1949 when I moved to california. Went back for a visit in 1975 but not since. I went to Wellington Elementary and Verdun High. Probably knew William Shatner in high school but do not remember. For those who remember - Buzz Beurling of WW2 fame lived next door to my family on Rielle Avenue. Still in touch with his cousin. Lots of memories. Susan Schofield nee Hibbert: 21st Nov 2008 - 12:11 GMTMy Dad Charlie and his twin brothers Roy and Donny Hibbert were brought up on Melrose Avenue, Verdun their Dad was a police Seargant in Verdun from 1924 to 1936 am trying to find out the name of the school ice hockey team they had what looks like an indian head on their jumpers. Hoping to visit Verdun Sept. 2009 to go on a trip down memory lane. Sandra MacDonald: 5th Dec 2008 - 12:57 GMTI left Verdun in 68 and have only gone back three times. I have the greatest memories of growing up there. I was back in June 07 and spent lots of time walking around Verdun and was so happy that it looked the almost the same. Claude: 18th Jan 2009 - 04:00 GMTUsed to live in Verdun, also in my childhood, my father did a bit of business in a financial building not far from a Steinberg's store (corner Verdun and Brault), I remember most of the commercial stores, Wellington Street mostly, my uncle worked at Steinberg's Verdun near Desmarchais (a Jean Coutu pharmacy), and I lived there between 2002 and 2004. Very charming part of town, I miss it a bit, however, it's fun to come back there once in a while to recap good memories... Great pictures, keep up the good work ! CL Bonnie: 23rd Feb 2009 - 01:58 GMTI lived in Verdun when I was a child. My family and I left when I was 12 years old and I am now 45 years old. Until this day I still miss it. When ever I get a chance to get back I do. I love walking down Wellington street, as we use to do that as a child.we love the bakery just before Allard street. Gilles Belec: 30th Mar 2009 - 23:08 GMTI lived in on rue de L'eglise, corner of Lesage Street from 1950-1955. These pictures brought back memories of me fishing in the Aquaduct, off the bridge. I attended Banantyne Elementary school to grade three, then we moved to Hadley Street in Ville Emard where I attended Connaught School. I played hockey a good bit and played high school football at Verdun High. I have lived here in Cplumbia, South Caroliona for the past 24 years. Thanks again for great memories. Le Bien, Le Mal: 18th May 2009 - 17:37 GMTSome of the days, I do wish that I spent only 45 minutes in Verdun ;-] Gilles Belec: 5th Jul 2009 - 00:21 GMTIf anyone thinks they might know me from when I lived in Verdun, on Rue De L'eglise, corner LeSage, from 1950-1955, please feel free to try to contact me by e-mail at: gilldianne@bellsouth.net. I attended Bannantyne Elem. and Verdun High. From there we moved to Hadley Street in Ville Emard, across Campell Park. Thanks. By the way, I have really enjoyed reading about Verdun on this sight. Brings back floods of wonderful memories. God bless.
Ron Wagnell: 3rd Aug 2009 - 19:30 GMTVerdun, what a place. Loved growing up there and really wish I could meet up with all my freinds, for just one more time. English & French, we played hockey together, we played together, we fought together and against each other, but wouldn't chance it for the world. Some real good shots, thanks for the memories. Pomegranate: 4th Oct 2009 - 00:23 GMTVerdun, very pretty, but very boring! No music scene, nightlife, shopping or taverns either! But eh.. if you want to start a family well away from the core of Montreal.. Comment on this article..[previous] :: [next] |
