Tacoma Narrows Bridge #2

- Tyfoid Kid - Friday, September 22nd, 2006 : goo

[previous] :: [next]

So everyone has seen the pictures of what happend to the first bridge across the Tacoma Narrows.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tacoma_Narrows_Bridge

They rebuilt that bridge and fixed the issue that caused it to buck wildly in the wind going in and out of the narrows. So as the population has exploded in the Seattle-Tacoma area the two lane bridge just won't cut it anymore so they are putting up a second bridge right next to the old one. We were going to Tacoma but got caught up in the detours and ended up going back and forth over the existing bridge twice in 20 minutes. The project is impressive.

The have the cables set with the ends for the bridge sections already on them and the sections are on these huge barges under the bridge stacked 8 or 10 high.

Big sand bags to counter the weight of the machine that's spininng the big cables (I think that's what it's doing.)

i was wondering who were the ones slowing down traffic and oggling the bridge.

The photo above that is said to have big sand bags countering the spinning cabels. Is actually large water balloons, they were used for a test pick before picking the actual deck section. The yellow beam is the picking beam which is attached to the gantry crane in mid span that rides the cables.

Would it have killed the engineers to design the new bridge to better match up with the old one?

Just read about the Galloping Gertie and it ended in this article . Very interesting reading.
