The Glory of a Sudden View: Auckland

the glory of a sudden view: auckland, new zealand

coated in early yellow sun, k'rd dances to its own beat.

business people walk towards work, lunches and work shoes in hand. a few people spill from bars onto the street.

school kids, uniform in blue, mill across the street and all over the sidewalk. two young lovers are in the same post they take up each morning, just up from brazil. each is absorbed in the mundane conversation they share and hold the other as if they are holding a balloon, that although held with the simplest grasp will be lost with just an open hand.

the sound of grinding coffee metal contrasts with the diggers on the construction site. the gym bunnies walk out of the not-yet-completed gym in old rendells building, clutching their sports towels and bottles.

k'rd is sure undergoing some changes these days.

it's an early morning meeting which places me here an hour earlier than usual today. i walk towards brazil, discounting a chant which comes from up ahead. however, as i cross mercury lane i realise that all is not well. there is a short white man, yelling angrily as blood runs down from above his ears and under his chin, down his throat. it's a gutteral sound, a mixture of polynesian languages and he waves his arms around madly. a group of schoolkids, including the lovers, stand a metre away trying to talk to him. a construction worker from a shop by the bakery and i join the crowd and try to find out what's going on; he then calls an ambulance for the man - for if he is not as mad as he seems, he definitely needs medical attention.

once the ambulance arrives i am on my way again and he is off to work. the kids disperse, and as i return from the post office, the sidewalk is clear but for a few late clubbers who have decided to catch the bus home.

if you aren't there when it happens, the street swallows its history. you're none the wiser. no matter what the baptists build or how much the gym bunnies multiply - k'rd will hold its own.
