Northside Fredericton

- CE - Saturday, August 26th, 2006 : goo

[previous] :: [next]

Most of the posts about have been centred pretty much around the south side of the city so I figured I would get some pictures of the other side of the to even things out a bit.

The north side is pretty much residential with the exception of Main Street which is a pretty horrible array of strip malls and smaller box stores like Home Hardware and Shoppers Drug Marts. I guess it's the downtown of the area but it's pretty sad (I wasn't really able to get any pictures as I don't have a wide angle lense to fit the buildings and parking lots in with the street). There is also a dying mall a little ways away but apparently a is planned for sometime in the future which should effectively kill off any life that does exist here.

Anyways, this is only a sample of what can be seen on this side of the river. I have now moved away from Fredericton so I can't really increase this. I haven't seen for awhile but if he/she comes back, hopefully we'll see more pictures.

This is the view of downtown Fredericton on the south side from where the old bridge used to end. All that is left now is the old pillers:

This is off Union Street which meets with Main Street a little ways down. It's at the head of the old bridge. I'm assuming it used to be a commercial area of sorts that died when the bridge was removed:

On Union Street. I think it was a factory of some sort at one time:

Henry Chan convenience Store. Apparently it gets robbed quite often.

A Strip mall:

The back of what I think was an old factory of some sorts, near the old train bridge. It is now a garage.

Ah, the north side. I am so glad I grew up on the south side. The only good thing I remember about the north side is the awesome pool-with-twisty-waterslide at Nashwaaksis Junior High.
Those bridge abutments (sp?) are great for bouldering (the ones on the bank obviously not in the river). My dad and I used to go down to the Green and practise on the bridge abutment there. You can kinda see in the picture above how the stone/brick thingies make good hand- and foot-holds. Fun!

Icckk...South Side is sooo much nicer! Im so sick of those damned LHHS'goers that all have that big 'Northside Strongside' shit in their heads...SOUTHSIDE ROCKS

And that brick building in the 5th pic used to be the actual police station! No wonder they moved to the new building downtown! XP

Thanks for the visual memories. I to grew up in Fredericton and lived on the north side up on Highland Ave. I can recall as a teen getting up in the morning and running down hill and across the OLD bridge to the old high school on George St. just to keep in shape for track season. Mmmmm those were the days, and oh yah the north side "Devon" was known as having the best and the worst of gangs. The Red Bld on the corner with fire hydrant out front used to be the CIBC bank back in the 50s -70s.

Excuse me. I moved to the North Side of Fredericton two years ago, and I'm glad that I didn't move to the South side. Everyone is much nicer on the North side, and although there may not be a huge mall such as the one on Regent street, everything one needs to survive is here on the North Side. If one wants a nice residential area, and somewhere to meet nice people, they should come to the North side. I'm also attending Leo Hayes High School, which is a much better high school than FHS. I've met people from FHS and they are all much more self-centred and rude than the people at Leo Hayes. Some of my friends have also attended FHS, and agree that the school is a run-down school, "In need or dire repairs" as the Daily Gleaner put it. The North side used to be the smaller part of Fredericton where the Native Reserve is, but I'm glad to say that it is now growing. The South side is the area where someone who wants the city life would live, while the North side is the area where someone who wants to raise a family would live. The North side is a much more family orriented area. Thank you very much.

I grew up on the northside (marysville). Yes Union and Main steets are not the most attractive streets, but if you were to peddle your little bike to the ville and take some pictures you would see the beauty history and uniqueness of the northside. The people on BOTH sides of the river are second to none.

The fifth photo was not a police station. The police station used to be on York Street, on the south side, and it was shared with the Fire Department. Now it is just the York Street Fire Station.

That building as Atlantic Rentals a few years ago, and I am sure if I thought about it I could remember what was there before that--I grew up in Nashwaaksis, had family who lived in Devon (on Union Street), and other family in good old Hammer Town (Barkers Point).

Fredericton North is great, I did some work there a couple of years ago clearing out the old CO-op store on St. Marys Rd. I 've also been to the new Wal-Mart up on Two Nations Rd.

We moved to the northside when moving here from Ontario. Fredericton is about 20 yrs behind well anywhere else in Canada especially when it comes to shopping. My god its a capital city and full of University students and theres no Old Navy, thats called cheap spending for students and why no IKEA?? Anyway, It is very nice around sunset drive area as well as Marysville. Barkers Point uhmm ya BIG BULLDOZER is all Im going to say However main and union the streets are in HORRIBLE shape and there are a lot of dumpy looking old buildings. Would be nice if the city would clean it all up and lose the dead and abandoned places as well, if you live on the northside does it hurt to tell your neighbour to clean up there crap in there yard maybe mow the lawn, throw a couple plants in the garden. Some people as I am aware may not have the $$ to spend a lot on fixing up but a little bit at a time and it will make a difference. Especially garbage in your yard, old cars, junk etc. Overall the northside is very nice as well as the southside it just depends on the area and if people actually care about there neighbourhood then they would keep it clean and not litter it up. So my personal message to Fredericton Clean Up and this is now 2008 not 1988.

I was born and raised in North Devon (1946-1976). I lived on Smith Street.
The building in the 3rd pic was the CIBC bank. It was robbed in the early 70s.
The 4th pic shows "Bolen's Store" (green shutters). It survived for a long long time and also was a post office. It's the last building on the right as you go towards the River Front drive on St. Marys street.
The next pic showing a large brick building, is/was known as "The Foundary", is located on the corner of Union Street and St. Marys, known as Watson's Corner, named after a long time resident family who lived across from it in a great brick building (where the pic is taken from). The Foundry did have a police office in it at one time but it was a Neighbourhood police office with a couple of officers assigned to it. The building at one time also housed a Frenchy's but I can only remember Atlantic Rentals being located in a building behind and to the right and located a distance back from Union Street. If I recall correctly it also was used to make artillery shells during WWII. It was destroyed by the city in '08 so they could build a turning lane for trucks.
Henry Chan's store used to be known as "Queeny" Davidson's store - a very popular and important store in the neighbourhood. Back in the 50's and 60s a kid could get a pop, chips, chocalate bar and penny candy for a quarter. The green lawn to the left is where the Watson's home was located. Now there is a single family type dwelling there that serves as a Union headquarters.
The last pic shows the back of the Craig Electric and Kelly Tire building by the underpass on Union Street. It was formally the Canada Eastern Railway Roundhouse and trainshed built in the 1800s. It was added to Fredericton's Heritage properties in December '08. Around at the front of this building, on the Carleton Park side of the yard, there is another smaller building (green colour) on the Provincial Preservation list. It is a part of the war time Internemnt Camp located on the Richibucto Road (Hwy 10, Road to Minto).
Fredericton's Northside is a great place to live and raise a family and no North Sider has to ever hang their head in shame because they live(d) there. The Northside is becoming the Jewel of the "Smart" City!!

how does on get to the north side without crossing the princess margaret,s bridge?

anon (64.150.176.78): 22nd Aug 2009 - 02:49 GMT

There was another bridge built in the 80s to replace the original one. It is the closest the city has to a "city" traffic system, and the drivers are terrifying. I live in Toronto, but come here to visit family from time to time, and the driving in the city is absolutely horrible.

The Southside is getting really seedy looking. The old train station needs to be torn down or restored. There are a lot of empty, dilapidated buildings. Fredericton, which used to be so beautiful is turning into very poor looking city. Maybe not Detroit yet, but its well on its way.

The people of Fredericton are among some of the most arrogant I have ever met. Like they are more important than anyone else. People say Torontonians are rude, no we are busy and rushed. Frederictonians are arrogant and ignorant. Not everyone of course, but try asking for directions around here or find truly good service at a restaurant and you will be saddened.

To say that one side of the city is better than the other is sort of like saying that you prefer the black mold on one side of a decaying piece of drywall over the yellow mold on the other. Lots of houses for sale here, and they are not nice houses. The best part of Fredericton now is sadly Douglas.
