Montreal Signs 4: Westmount and Mount Royal

The fourth article of the series.

Westmount
Population - 20,003

Although a few other parts of Montreal Island now have higher per capita incomes, none carries the connotation of wealth and old money that Westmount does to Montrealers. The Beverly Hills of the Montreal region, Westmount is right where its name would lead you to believe: on the west side of Mount Royal, with old stone mansions nestled on the back streets at the higher levels of the city.

Town of Mount Royal (Ville de Mont-Royal)
Population - 18,682

A moderately affluent planned community nestled at the northern foot of Mount Royal. The western edges of the town are industrial, most of the rest is residential. The town is infamous for caving in to Quebec's language politics this June and painting over any English descriptions such as "Road" or "Street" on its street signs.

I didn't think Westmount was that urban. I figured it was all large stone houses and such. Which metro stop is that?

I got stuck in VMR the other day. I jumped on a random bus outside of Concordia to hopefully do some sightseeing. it ended up being the Cote-des-Neiges bus. It wasn't a bad little ride, I saw quite a bit until it got too dark to really see anything. All of a sudden, the houses start moving away from each other and from the street. I couldn't figure out where I was until we got ot the centre of the town and I knew I must be in VMR because of what I had seen on Google Earth. Everyone gets off the bus and the driver looks back at me and says something. I think he told me it was the end of the line (my French is very rusty and needs a lot of work). I get off and realize that I have no idea how to get home and know that it will be about a 30+ minute walk. I start walking around and see a bus shelter. I get in it and about 5 minutes later, the bus that I got off of starts up again and takes me to the closest metro stop. He must have thought I was crazy or just stupid.

Also, it looks like the Westmount stop signs were only in english since "stop" is centred. I thought the problem was that they were bilingual and the government didn't even want that; they want #all# French.

EvilGentleman: 25th Aug 2006 - 08:23 GMT

That picture was taken from the corner of Atwater and Sainte-Catherine, at the west end of downtown. The metro station is Atwater. Westmount is generally a lot more residential, but I wanted a picture of a border sign, so I wound up in front of Plaza Alexis Nihon, which is 80% in Westmount and 20% in the Ville Marie borough of Montreal. Across the street behind me as I took this picture is the old Forum.

The stop sign is in Mount Royal, not Westmount, and I agree, the language on the stop sign does not make sense, considering the English is blacked out on the street signs. Logic is rare in these parts, it would seem.

"stop" is actually a french word in origin, which was actually an arguement that was made a little while ago by the French Language Police, but the end result was that STOP was originated in french language and just adopted by english.

i just say everyone learns both english AND french and everyone becomes happier. it sucks to see people who have lived their whole lives in this great iisland and have missed out on half of the things that happen because of their ignorance of the other half of the popluation because of a language barrier.

Vive le Montreal bilingue :)

Here in Moncton the stop signs say Stop Arre^t. I will post a picture once I figure out how to make them (the pics) smaller.

I have been going nuts looking for a picture I know I took of an Inuttitut stop sign up in northern Quebec. I wanted it to be the lead shot of a series I was going to post with all the different stop signs I have seen in it. Maybe I should just post the Montreal-area shots, and then if I find others from elsewhere, I can add them to the comments.
