Norgate Shopping Centre

- CE - Thursday, August 24th, 2006 : goo

Canada's first strip mall built in 1949. My eyes always tear up a bit with pride when looking at this beautiful first in mass consumerism.

That Pharmaprix in the first picture was just refurbished at the beginning of this summer. I bought a bunch of Buckley's cough syrup there when my whole family came down with a bad cough and sore throats in June.

Sirhcbre: 24th Aug 2006 - 16:44 GMT

Ah, Buckley's, the cough syrup of the gods. There isn't a cough that stuff can't fix!

I'm working on a quick pdf document to promote two spaces for rent in the Norgate Shopping Centre, I would like to know if I can have some pictures of yours in high resolution? Let me know if this is possible. Thanks

Great effort! I haven't been back to St. Laurent for ages, but this article and excellent photography are like an instant time machine. Please continue to add more photographs and articles. The Decarie Hot Dog article is great! D.H.D. was our favorite hangout in St. Laurent, and we spent many an hour discussing all kinds of things with the owner, 'Tony The Best', who always put a positive spin on every topic. Thanks so much!

Hello!

I'm working in this shopping center. I work for a chiropractor who's situated on top of Tim Horton. The first chiropractor ''Dr Pierre Paquin, chiropractor'' opened his practice in 1950 and Dr Carl Frégeau, chiropractor took over in 1992. So the office exist now for almost 58 years. We have some pictures that show the vacant area before the shopping center was built. I think the only ones who are in the original location are the Royal Bank and us.

My husband and I are going to Montreal in June 2008 for our 50th wedding anniversary. We had one of our first dates at a smoked meat place in Norgate shopping Centre. I guess it's not there any more. The sandwiches were great and just 35 cents. We'll probably drive by for a look anyway.

Robert: 3rd Oct 2008 - 14:15 GMT

Hi Marg Gunhouse (Nee Dodds)

The place where you had your first date with the great 35 cent smoked meat sandwiches was called 'Curly Que' and has neon signs in their wondows advertising the best smoked meat sandwiches in town. It's been long gone for many years, we've been told, but Norgate has the same feel as it did in the 1970's, when we used to go there as kids.

chris : you got it all right robert lol

micheline laberge: 14th Nov 2009 - 14:45 GMT

hey,i think the Norgate Solid Brothers ( GANG ),have a chapter in Verdun Beach & East Side Rosemont too ,,on the name of N.S.B ..

It's nice to see a Fifties-era mall that hasn't strayed too far away from its original design. I've seen recent pix of Southgate Mall and there doesn't seem to be much of the old fabric left...

i lived in the norgate apts. on quimet st just behind the shopping center, it brings back great memories of curly que's and all the stores. when i was 16 i worked at the mr. donut across the street.

Mike: 25th Oct 2010 - 20:31 GMT

My late mother used to take me shopping at the Norgate shopping center 1961 to 69 Groceries at Dionne's supermarket I remember the Tim Hortons was a pharmacy with a lunch counter & soda fountain c1950's my best friend bought a Mickey Mouse watch there an Original.
Later Kresge's opened up at the far end near Cote Vertu Blvd.beside Household Finance

I grew up in St. Laurent - on Filion Street. Norgate was always a "big deal". Saw Pierre Trudeau there at a political rally circa 1968!! Thanks for the memories!!

Tom: 1st Oct 2011 - 15:50 GMT

I saw my beloved school teacher swoon, yes, actually swoon at a little bald guy everyone seemed to think so much of. It was an early deposit on a lifetime of political bewilderment!

robert: 26th Nov 2011 - 04:41 GMT

I was born and raised on quimet street. my brother and I would go to curly que's for smoke meat nearly
once a week. Huskies hardware was there, along with kresge's, woolworth's, dionne's and the royal bank where I traded a dollar bill for a 1963 silver dollar which I still have. my brother and I visited norgate around 1981 and got a smoked meat sandwich from curly que's and then went to the pharmacy for 2 quarts of beer to wash down the best ever smoked meat sandwiches in Montreal. I remember as a child, curly que (a short little bald pudgy man) was always very nice to my brother and I as he new my parents. I just hope Canada's first mall will still be there when my kids are my age (54). Other places I remember going to were orange julep , piasso tomasso, ruby foo's, st oban ice cream shop. I love Montreal, I always will. I have lived in Calgary for the past 33 years, when asked where I'm from, I am always proud to say, Montreal. they still call me an easterner and I still call them rednecks.

Janice: 25th Dec 2011 - 05:19 GMT

I was born and raised on O'Brien (before Norgate). Still remember walking through the mall to and from school, and having lunch at Curly-Que's on the week-end. Shopping with Mom, and the the long walk home with the groceries. Taking shoes to be soled. Pictures to be developed. Wandering the aisles of Kresges, and the hardware store.
Loved all the comments and all the memories they evoked.

Robert april 23/12: 23rd Apr 2012 - 18:48 GMT

Hi Janice, just wondering what year you lived there? For me it was 1958 - 1966.
Robert.

Bob: 18th May 2012 - 21:41 GMT

I remember Curly Que very well. My buddy's Mom, Loretta (big hair) worked there and we would get our smoked meat for free. And the fries!!! I lived in VSL from 1952-1974 and went to Father Mac. I live out west now but get back there every couple of years - and always find reason to visit Norgate - even if just for a couple of quarts at the depanneur. Anyone remember the hobby shop in the "alley" by Rochon?

Mrs.I.Bonny May28,2012: 28th May 2012 - 15:09 GMT

Hi Robert-The name of the hardware store was Duske's.

Hi Bob-The name of the hobbie shop was Forester.

Robert : 13th Dec 2012 - 01:14 GMT

Hi Mrs.I. Bonny, It's some time since I have visited this site, when I wrote that comment about the hardware store, I new I got the name wrong! Thanks for reminding me. What years did you live there till or...still are.
Hi Bob (great name!) I too moved out west to Calgary, where did you end up?
Hope all of you are well,
Robert.

Mrs.I.Bonny May28,2012: 2nd Jan 2013 - 18:01 GMT

Hi Robert.
We lived in Norgate from 1954 to 1964.
We bought a house in Laval but I always missed Norgate.
We used to go back to Curly Q for Smoked Meat Sandwiches until it closed.
Now that I am a widow I would like to sell my house and go back.
It may happen this year.Happy New Year--From Mrs.Bonny.
