Blvd Decarie, Ville Saint-Laurent
[previous] :: [next]Welcome to my new neighbourhood. This is blvd Decarie in the old section of the borough of Ville Saint-Laurent. Decarie is actually much more than what I'm going to show here but this section of the boulevard is more or less the "downtown" of the borough. Below the area in the first picture, the Autoroute Decarie begins which is a below grade highway that cuts right through the original street. Blvd Decarie now runs on either side of the autoroute with mixed results. We begin near where the autoroute ends and the old section of Ville Saint-Laurent begins. This is an area that Jane Jacobs would have described as a "border vacuum" as it is pretty much where the neighbourhood is cut off by something that is of no appeal to pedestrians. Because of this, this area of the street receives little pedesrian traffic other than people walking to their houses or switching busses outside the metro stop. The residential block before the commercial section begins: New condos and an entrance/exit to the Du College metro stop across the street from the previous picture: The beginning of the commercial area with another entrance/exit to Du College on the right and Beaudet Park on the left: Shops across the street from the metro on rue Du College: Entrance to Beaudet Park from rue Du College: Even this far north, Montreal's signature spiral staircases can still be found: Some shots of the street as we make our way north:
Most of the side streets off Decarie are quiet with 2 or 3 story duplexes or multi-apartment buildings: The Côte-Vertu metro station where this post came from: Ending the commercial area of the street is a large fruit stand and grocery store. I haven't strolled any further but it seems to turn back into a residential street after this. Norgate Shopping Centre, on the other side of the street, gets it's own post. There is a large revitalization project slated for the boulevard. It was supposed to already be underway but I can't find any evidence of it other than upgrades to a parking lot on an adjacent street. I'm going to visit the borough office tomorrow and I'll get more information on it (there is an excellent .pdf file that outlines it all but I can't seem to find it). This article has been viewed 21910 times in the last 7 years aer suzuki: 24th Aug 2006 - 09:46 GMTthe spiral staircases are cool, really great style. also love the photo of the building with the bite taken out of it, can't see the rest, the images won't load for me. EvilGentleman: 24th Aug 2006 - 15:32 GMTGood shots, Sir. I can't believe how weird it feels to finally have someone else post pictures of things I saw this morning. Now we know how the Toronto and New York people feel. Sirhcbre: 24th Aug 2006 - 16:47 GMTI felt the same way when Marlo started posting from Fredericton. I like wandering around and recognizing something only to remember that I had seen it from one of your posts. It's a weird feeling to be somewhere I've never been in my life and recognize it. It also helps beat a bit of the culture shock I'm currently experiencing. EvilGentleman: 24th Aug 2006 - 19:09 GMTI think the ultimate thing is when you get posts like this. By the way, did you get my email, Sir? Chris Erb: 2nd Sep 2006 - 03:16 GMTDo you park your car against the median strip and then run like hell through the traffic to get to the legitimate sidewalk and relative safety? Sirhcbre: 2nd Sep 2006 - 06:15 GMTI wasn't even near a computer when that was posted. I'm very confused right now. Sirhcbre: 27th Sep 2006 - 01:23 GMTfinally found the Revitalization plan. It's being delayed because they're starting phase 2 (the parking lot) first and there are a lot of concerns (many of which I don't agree with) from the store owners. saintlaurent.ville.montreal.qc.ca/En/Intro/dest_decarie_en.pdf I've been wanting to go to planning meetings but they happen the same days I have class all day until 10:45pm.

Frank Quinn: 22nd Nov 2010 - 17:39 GMTThere's a plan to have a party in Beaudet Park in the Summer of 2011 organised by a bunch of hippies who hung out in the park late sixties. If you were part of the people who hung out on Decarie and the park back then, send me an e-mail and I will keep you posted as to the dates. allan youster: 4th Feb 2011 - 17:54 GMTthanks for posting these pictures, does anyone have any pictures to post from back before the bandstand was taken down and the stupid fountain put in (1967)? happy gardens, sapri pizza, bouvin music store, and le buchere de franc... the lucerne, boraz and mr. hotdog. chex jack's fish and chips, b-sharp and renwicks...hi gliddleman and his comix store Cheryl Esbenshade: 22nd Feb 2011 - 18:42 GMTI lived in Norgate Apartments on Decarie Blvd as a kid in the early to late 1950s. I attended Parkdale Elementary School. Got stitches at Notre Dame de L'Esperance Hospital. We moved from St Laurent to Ste Dorothee, also a great area, but mostly rural then. Last time I visited St Laurent was in 1983. Have great memories of living there. Every summer my family went to Belmont Park. Sad to discover it doesn't exist anymore. Enjoyed the photos. codyoreo: 23rd Feb 2011 - 14:17 GMTWow! Reading all these posting is awesome. codyoreo: 23rd Feb 2011 - 14:19 GMTDoes anyone remember a bandstand off of decarie behind Pittsburg glass. The street might be Dion, there was a pond and I remember going there with my parents to hear a band playing on Sundays. kathyd: 4th May 2011 - 15:57 GMTI lived in St. Laurent for a short time in the early 70's and worked in the Zellars store that I am sure is not there anymore. There was a great pastry shop in the same little mall area. Very nice photos. I lived in one of the brick buildings also. Old Montrealer: 2nd Jun 2011 - 20:19 GMTYou have wonderful photos here. I havne't seen this area in many many years. I will go look into my basement where I think I have a box of old photos of the Park and Decarie from the 50s and 60s. Can i attach them here somehow? Brian Maged: 6th Aug 2011 - 23:48 GMTThe Norgate shopping centre was the first in Canada and came after the Northgate centre in Seattle by the same man who created the space needle there. It anticipated the shopping malls on west island that appeared during the sixties Fairview and West Island mall. Brian Maged: 6th Aug 2011 - 23:53 GMTThe office of landscape architect Louis Perron was just south of Beaudet Park on the west side. I worked on renderings for the 1976 Olympic Games there after having been selected from his class at Macdonald College. Brian Maged: 6th Aug 2011 - 23:56 GMTYves was the owner of the LeClerc ice cream store prior to its conversion to Bonatartes with co-owner Aaron Rand. Barbara Radford: 16th Sep 2011 - 15:40 GMTI grew up on St. Aubin street.. # 965...our family lived there from 1950 till 1970. So many wonderful memories of a very care free childhood where I could go out of my house and wander around fields, streets and parks without fear. Fond memories of my friends Mary and Pam playing till the street lights went on. Skipping, stando, hide and seek and Mother may I were the games of choice. We walked everywhere and if we did need to go farther, we took the street car. I was hoping to find a photo of the Ice Cream parlor (St. Aubin`s) behind Dagwoods. Our street was the last one before miles of fields that stretched along Cote Vertu. Horses, cows and empty farm houses were part of my reality. Listening to the loud engine sounds coming from Canadair .. skating at Goyer park, digging in the sand, climbing the monkey bars. I went to the English side of Cardinal Leger and then to Holy Cross. Church - Our Lady of Fatima, where I spent many hours at lent and in the girls choir. Plus going to CYO. Bouras and Chicken Heaven were the teen hangouts in every classic sense. It was a happy time. william (bill)Bumbray: 17th Nov 2011 - 14:52 GMTI would appreciate any input as to a picture that appears on the COOLOPOLIS website, depicted in a series of photograps related to bygone daays pictures of Monteal, the bottom picture looks very familiar, cadillacs, I thought it might have been taken Edouard Laurin near Decarie 1958 prior to the Metro station going in, would appreciate feedback, if not does anyone have an idea as to where this pic may have been taken. Thanks AinslieT: 28th Jan 2012 - 21:08 GMTI grew up on Gohier Street where our backyard faced Norgate Shopping Centre. I watched Norgate being built. And later on spent many many hours over there. I remember it all, St Aubins, Bouras, Chichen Heaven, on and on. I have pictures of my parents and me at that park on Decarie past Church. We skated every night at Cardinal Park/Cote Vertu. So many memories. A simpler and happier time of life. Went to Parkdale, Sir Winston, St Laurent High, Bethel Baptist Church. Fond Memories. Jim Taylor: 18th Feb 2012 - 02:43 GMTLike most of you that have posted comments I grew up during my teenage years in St Laurent, living on Cardinal, Tasse and ultimately out near Canadair on Jasmin St. I am part of a St Laurent group that have perpetuated the St laurent in the 50's and 60's mood, and good feelings, putting together reunions every few years in Montreal. The last one we held in 2008 at the Holiday Inn in Pointe Claire attracted pover 150 people from all over the world. We are having another one this year on May 26th at the Novotel Hotel in St Laurent. So far, in excess 125 people have committed to attend. We will discuss all the old high schools, the St Laurent Raiders and St Laurent Jets plus dancing at the Northmount "Y", BB BBQ, Golden Halls, and having a smoked meat at Boura's after too many pints at the Texas Tavern. We should not forget Lees Cafe, The Galaxy Show Bar, the Cartierville Grill, and all the other haunts we frequented as kids. Sunil K.: 18th Feb 2012 - 05:47 GMTMy life in Canada started with a brief stay in St. Laurent back in May 1996 (anyone remember extended winter that year?) It was only for 3 weeks before I moved to Ontario. I used to walk up and down Decarie every day whether to get to the Brasserie internet cafe or the library or the employment centre. In a general sense I liked the area, especially the landscaping around the street. Rita: 15th May 2012 - 06:59 GMTI'd love to hook up with some old friends from the sixties who lived in "the old house on O'Brien". Reggie was one of the residents! ...are you guys still out there? I have many memories from that house; Rita: 15th May 2012 - 07:10 GMTp.s. Arleen Chenoll (Smith): 9th Jun 2012 - 22:57 GMTCan't believe I found this website when looking for something about Ville St. Laurent. Sorry I missed the recent (May 2012) reunion but heard it was a great success and hope to attend a future event. I was born and brought up in the wartime housing development on Stanislas Street, attended St. Laurent High for Grade 8, then moved into the new Malcolm Campbell High School until Graduation. Moved to BC in 1975 but stayed in touch with several girl friends. Still have family on the West Island. Loved seeing the photos of Decarie and the old buildings. Spent a lot of time at places others have mentioned, Bouras - smoked meat (medium and a bit greasy) and chips in those little plastic bowls, Paul's which was close to the Moncton Train Station where we ate french fries almost every day after school and where we were able to dance to the jukebox. Memories also of the Rockcliffe in Moran Heights and the Rawdon Inn where Allan Nichols play with his band. John Malcolm played at the sock hops at MCHS and years later his son Ryan Malcolm won the first Canadian Idol. Ran into him at his restaurant in Kingston, ON a few years back where they play together in a band. Hope to see more photos of my old home town on this site. Kate Chesser: 20th Oct 2012 - 14:18 GMTI remember St-laurent, so close to Belmont Park! Bouras, Chicken Haven and the Fontaine Bleu. A little bit of magic there. Went to Parkdale too. Miss some of those days. Halloween especially! John greenfield: 3rd Nov 2012 - 04:20 GMTYa! I lived near Val Royal shopping center went to Winston Churchhill and eat steamed hot dogs on Decarie. Lived there from 1951 to 1975. Live in B. C. Now. Going back next summer hope I don't get lost. anon (107-207-249-195.lightspeed.rcsntx.sbcglobal.net): 7th Dec 2012 - 15:52 GMTHi Everyone I was lonesome today and just wanted to look up Ville St Laurent. I enjoyed reading all the comments AGAIN! I missed the reunion. I can just feel myself walking down Decarie passing by all those places. Hope there is some snow for you guys. I live in Texas now. We lived behind the Cote Vertu Metro on Gohier--house not there anymore. (Torn down for progress!) Merry Christmas to All. Norma Linda H: 11th Dec 2012 - 21:33 GMTCan't believe what I'm reading! I also lived in the Norgate apartments, went to Parkdale Elem, then Sir Winston Churchill before we moved out to Ile Perrot. I still dream about the ice cream at St Aubins - never found anything better. I now live in Colorado and definitely don't miss the winters, but oh how I miss Montreal! Doug P : 15th Jan 2013 - 20:34 GMTLived on Depatie St , went to Father Mac, made it in the TP Tavern at 16, "order your draft and keep quiet" Galaxie if you wanted to see fights. Binged on steamies at Biere D'epinete, went to Vanier ( CEGEP) had a cottage in Rawdon, played for the St laurent Titans. Did my share of stuff in Beaudet Park, the hang out. Brings back many memories. Suzanne L Jan 30 2013: 30th Jan 2013 - 20:55 GMTI just discovered this site and it brings back memories. I used to live in St Laurent and went to school on Tasse st and lived at the Decaire Apts. Also lived and went to school in Rosemount. Married in the late 60's and moved to Sud On in the early 70's. I often think of St Laurent and my husband and I often talk about it. I hope to go back one day for a visit.
