Driving Across the Street Since 1968

I'm not sure if you can tell that I love Astoria. I truly, sincerely think it's marvelous. And when I see things like this ad for the local driving school I practically get teary-eyed.

First off, I love that they chose to hand paint it and not sodomize it with any of that professionally produced crap. I feel the painter’s pain when he (or she, but most likely he) realized that the steering wheel struts were not in the proper 10-2 position and corrected them. I commend him for this attention to detail, as this hand-on-steering-wheel positioning is one of the foundations of good driving.

The copy sings. It’s a haiku of advertising. When your driving school is named Ferrari, you’d better emphasize that you teach safe driving. Underlining the word helps. They proudly state that they’ve been in business since 1968, before man walked on the moon, I might add. Then they give their location, with an address, directions and an arrow. Unfortunately, if taken literally, the copy could be misconstrued to mean that they’ve been teaching safe driving across the street, possibly no further. Even this, I find charming.

This is awesome. I get the same way when I see murals in my hometown on Long Island. Neighborhood/civic pride rules!

Speaking of murals, colavitos ghost, when are we gonna see some of yours?

Not sure why the author uses the word "sodomize" in her summary. May want to check on the definition there, spunky. The photos are generally average but the comments are as koo-koo as all hell. Now back to the kitchen to cook my kreplach, and don't serve it on the cheap cat ceramics!

Obviously, the previous post from "Mitch Waxman" is not my Mitch.

Toppled Crane Recovery Operation

On July 6, I went to go take some pictures of a construction crane that fell next to Autoroute 20 in the Montreal borough of Lachine, just next to 53rd avenue. The crane had been drilling holes for the supports...
