Wow, it sure cleaned up a lot. When I was a teen in the 80's, I remember seeing lots and lots of seedy porn theaters on 8th avenue.

i kid you not, i am currently wearing a pair of jeans i got at the store pictured behind the cab in the second photo. i lived only a few blocks away from there when i used to live in ... small world!

As a tourists, my friends and I stayed at that hotel (Manhattan Broadway) in the top picture. Certainly an authentic experience, plus it fit into our budget nicely.

i didn't even notice that sign till you commented, but in fact i stayed there too in 1998. like you said, it was nothing special but it was a place to sleep, and centrally located.
