War As Usual

This picture was taken at the gay beach in Tel Aviv, right to the north of the separated ultra-orthodox beach (fyi, yesterday was ladies day).

The sunset over the mediterranean was amazingly beautiful. A near perfect ending to a good day learning hebrew and exploring the market.

Yet the trail of military aircraft heading north was a constant reminder that all is not well. The people on the beach seemed indifferent to the helicopters and warplanes; they stopped to look at me taking pictures of the sky, but not looking at the sky itself. It's such an apparent privilege to be able to ignore a fucking war like this. I stopped and thought about the people in Gaza, Lebanon, and Haifa, wondering if they were looking at the same sunset... and cursing me for being here, still able to enjoy it.

I felt the same way in Church last Sunday. I was sick to my stomach remembering the newspaper photos I'd seen of the casualties - especially the women and children -- ashamed at how the leaders of my country don't really seem to care, and how they're supposed to believe in the same God I do. I felt hopeless that in this day and age people could be so heartless. Does it really matter that much where you live - that you're willing to kill over a piece of land?

is that 2nd photo for real? if that's not tweaked at all, it's unbelieveable.

Sally: 10th Aug 2006 - 07:31 GMT

I used the sunset filter on my camera. Without it it looks like this:

More centered, less interesting colors. Does that still count as "real"?

either way, these are amazing shots. Fabulous.

EvilGentleman: 10th Aug 2006 - 22:12 GMT

I have never used a sunset filter. Do they usually change the colours that much? I have an auto-focus point-and-shoot, so the only filtering I can do is to experiment by pointing my camera at slightly different places to lock the exposure, then move the camera back to the position for taking the actual picture. Seems to work ok so far, especially with my Arctic sunsets.

I love these shots. Unreal. Amazing --- and a spectacular view.
