The path to heaven was a favourite allegory during the Medieval period of Europe. The bridge, the boat, the staircase, the ladder, even the use of skiis in certain parts of northern Europe were common enough as recognizable symbols.
Society having changed somewhat over the centuries, the path to redemption might be represented in equally contemporary images.
A midnight walk through Fredericton, I think, might shed some light on the subject.

Southside Redemption Centre. Self-evident.

The Bridge, with many lights, because too many people tripped in the dark before reaching the light at the end of the tunnel.

BMO Beacon. Travelling is expensive and the ubiquity of bank machines makes the way to heaven that much easier-- so long as you don't overdraw your account at interac. As Chris Erb has pointed out, the Bank of Montreal building is the tallest in town, even if it falls short of scraping the heavens. The Bank of Montreal is a beacon to the lost.

Christ Church Cathedral at night. Still a popular method, religion (particularly when organized inside a Gothic Revival structure that is lit in flattering lights at night) features strongly in the city's methods of transportation to heaven and tourist attraction.

Great article! You've made excellent use of different places around the city to tie a theme together. I really enjoy these types of posts.

On a side note, everytime you post, it always creeps me out a little. I'm used to seeing pictures of everywhere but Fredericton on the front page. It's strange and fun to bring up Citynoise and see something on the front page that is two blocks from my house. I'm glad that you've found this site!

Yes, I imagine it is a bit odd... you having been the only contributor to the Fredericton section until now. And Fredericton IS so small it's hard not to recognize a place.

Can I redeem my coupons and winning bottle caps at the redemption centre?

Marlo: 3rd Aug 2006 - 04:55 GMT

I've never been, myself, though from the outsider's perspective it seems to be strictly bottles.
Lots of crashing and smashing going on, with a line up of cars Saturday and Sunday, drivers eager to be redeemed of nights they can't remember. Or so I sometimes imagine.

(Snorts) I thought it looked a little seedy for a born-again Christian church. Nice find, it misled me pretty well.

Halifax, Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, Winnipeg...
Cleveland, Detroit, Boston, St. Louis, Washington DC, Miami, Phoenix, Las Vegas...
Even Tokyo!
Fredericton has passed them all! So many posts for such a small city. Amazing...

By the way, if either of you two could get some shots by the courthouse of either Gregory Allan Despres or any of the security and media surrounding him, that would prove to be quite interesting.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the name of Gregory Allan Despres, he is the man who murdered an elderly couple in Minto, NB, and then was allowed to enter the United States by US Customs despite having a blood-stained chainsaw and hatchet, as well as a homemade sword and brass knuckles, all of which were confiscated. The Department of Homeland Security must have had a shit fit over this one. I could just imagine what would happen if they caught a real terrorist. "Sir, we cannot let you enter the United States unless you forfeit your bombs. Thank you. Have a nice day."

Part of the story can be found at www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2005/07/22/despres050722.html

jack: 3rd Aug 2006 - 12:28 GMT

EG that guy despres is truly evil. you should drop the evil and just be the gentleman!

Marlo: 3rd Aug 2006 - 13:07 GMT

How do you explain a bloodied chainsaw to border crossing authorities? "I was trying to open my catsup package and needed something sharp."
That is very disturbing... I do recall hearing something about it on the CBC radio, but didn't pay much attention at the time.
The border authorities at Calais and St. Stephen's are either entirely too trusting/stupid, afraid, or unsure of their human, if not legal, responsibilities.

Chris Erb: 3rd Aug 2006 - 14:12 GMT

Did they bring him back to Fredericton? I thought he was being tried in the States.

I finish my job this week so I'll have 2 weeks off and still be in Fredericton. If I hear anything, I'll go down to the courthouse and try to get pictures of the media frenzy.

EvilGentleman: 3rd Aug 2006 - 14:36 GMT

Yeah, he's in Fredericton. This is a current CBC News article: www.cbc.ca/canada/new-brunswick/story/2006/08/02/despres-nb.html

Thanks for the suggestion, jack. But I try so hard to be honest and modest, and Gentleman sounds so egotistical, and what about my bad days? Best to leave things as is and keep my bases covered.
