Save Yre's!

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to eat chicken from Yre's BBQ, a Haitian restaurant with a unique way of using charcoal to cook chicken. I am not sure exactly how they do it, but I have never had chicken like this before. They have no seating inside, so all business is take-out. While I waited for my chicken to be ready, I went outside and took some pictures.

This is Yre's, an Ottawa landmark if ever there was one. Say, what is that notice on the wall?

image 12904
The bastards! They want to tear down these small family-run businesses so they can put up a 9-story mixed residential and commercial building? Do you think the small businesses here will get a fair chance to stay in business? Hell no! Just another excuse for these money-hungry landlords to toss their faithful tenants out on their asses, so they can make more money.

Famous Falafel on the corner will get torn down, too. Their donairs are top-notch.

I love Famous Falafel's window display.

So what can we do to stop this? I am not a resident of Ontario, so my voice will fall on deaf ears, but if any of you citynoisers are from Ottawa, please help Yre and his neighbours stay in business. They are all immigrants, and work very hard to make a living. If anyone deserves a break, Yre's Chicken BBQ, Pino's Barber Shop, and Famous Falafel do. Let's see what chance the little guys have in the face of big $.

I will inquire at the city of ottawa about what they can do. I chair the poverty community, maybe they will be able to direct me to the right person.

A small detail, but it's not a Haitian restaurant, actually, it's Ivory Coast food. And man, is it good.

I'm writing a review of Yre's chicken this week in XPress. I'll be sure to mention what's going on with the re-zoning, and tell people to get in touch with the city if they'd like to complain.

Thanks for taking the time to post this!

Just had supper at Yre's... Good stuff!

Also, the tear-down sign is gone: woohoo!

Yre's is the best chicken I ever tasted. It was a real treat to get some when I lived in Gloucester. Unfortunately, I moved 70 km east of Ottawa. I haven't been to Charlotte St. for several years. Anecdotally, I heard the end of a positive restaurant review on CBC (c. 2000). So I took out my young teenage son to Yre's, requesting him to get dressed properly, of course. And I did too -- shirt & tie, dress pants. You can imagine our surprise when we arrived at the bright green and orange wall restaurant, and sat on stools!!! The 'cuisine' was definitely worth the trip. I would actually drive across town for that chicken. I hope Yre's did survive! I'll look for it next time I go to Ottawa. Thanks for posting this.

hey: Yre's is not a haitian restaurant! It's AFRICAN!

If you look carefully, the nationality of the cuisine was corrected over 2 years ago. Someone commented the same thing on July 11, 2006. But thanks for the correction.
