Sidewalk Time Capsule

- EvilGentleman - Monday, June 19th, 2006 : goo

The recent roadwork on to remove the streetcar rails had some interesting side effects.

At the corner of Sainte-Catherine and Guy, the concrete crosswalks were replaced. When they pulled up the old concrete, it became apparent that there had been garbage on the ground when the concrete was originally poured. This garbage was now trapped on the underside of the upturned concrete slab, effectively creating a junk-food time capsule to circa 1982.

The Hostess potato chip bag was the most familiar item of the set, even though I have not seen the Hostess name for years now (not counting cupcakes). I can still hear the commercials: "When you've got the munchies, nothing else will do..."

Also of note were the cup from Kojax (a souvlaki chain) and the vintage McStraw and McLid set.

I wonder if the new concrete will be stronger, assuming it has less garbage in its composition...

long live non-biodegradable petrochemical packaging!

well at least future archaeologists & anthropologists will know that we were a proud people, too proud to pick up after ourselves, apparently. or rather not proud enough...or maybe the trash will be perceived as religious paraphernalia, encased in rock for preservation throughout time. damn, it's ugly.

anyway, cool images. didn't you just shoot a series of fire photos? [also cool] how do you find this stuff, or maybe more accurately, where do you find the time?

EvilGentleman: 20th Jun 2006 - 15:49 GMT

The fire was shot on St Paddy's, saw the glow from the distance while dropping a friend off at 3 AM, so I went to investigate (I had no class the next day). This sidewalk stuff, I saw it while on my break between classes, as it is right across the street from my linguistics class. The main thing is, I always have my camera on hand, as well as spare batteries and memory cards.

EvilG: yeah that helps...even though i have a [relatively] cheap little point and shoot, i still spent what amounts to a nice chunk'a change on it [for me] so for a long time didn't trust myself to cart the camera around, i'm just now getting over that.

what kind of camera do you use, just out of curiousity?

EvilGentleman: 21st Jun 2006 - 10:18 GMT

If you right-click any image in citynoise, then click properties, it will usually tell you the camera it was taken with. I am using a Fujifilm A510, which is basically a mid-range in the cheap point-and-shoot category. I have also used a Fujifilm A330 and a Kodak DC280. One day, I hope to afford a decent digital SLR camera, but it is out of reach for me at the moment.

PS - Cheap cameras are the best to carry everywhere, less worries that way.

Video Stills of the Pre-9/11 New York

The following images are stills captured from a video my wife and I shot on August 11, 1999. Little did I know that these buildings had exactly 25 months to live.
