Bridge Seat

- Tyfoid Kid - Tuesday, June 6th, 2006 : goo

Walked across this bridge many times between the west and east bank campus. It used to be closed because it was still just a railroad bridge.

I had friends who went to school here and they said you could do the walk across putting a foot on each tie ala the kids from that movie Stand By Me if you were brave enough (or late enough for a class.)

They made it into a pedestrian bridge about 8 years ago. Looks like that would have been a pretty long, slow walk.

Looked over the railing in the middle of the river and here's a seat with a great view.

The view from the chair

and low and behold down below was among other things

a bike

and on the other side was a birds nest. I'd have to guess a Canadian Goose since the eggs are so big.

Instead of stopping to smell the flowers I'll have to remember to stop and look over the edge from time to time.

Where does the bridge take you to and from. it looks like a nice walk, we have something similar here where they turned an old train bridge into a walking bridge. There's a plaque on the bridge saying it's the longest pedestrian bridge in the world. How true that is remains to be seen.

tel me you didin't sit in the chair? that's a pretty dangerous chair to be sitting in

In the 5th picture down you can see the other pedestrian bridge (the Washington Ave Bridge) that connects the East and West Banks of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. This bridge is denoted as a bikeway on this campus map onestop.umn.edu/Maps/mpls.jpg but it's used for the same purpose, to get to buildings on one side of the river or the other. On the west end of the bridge it connects to the Minneapolis bike trail system. It's a little different since both ends of the Washington Ave bridge are on campus and this one has one end on campus (east end) and one end off (west end.)

No I'm not sittin in that chair. It's wedged in there pretty good but how sturdy it is remains to be seen and of course if you're wrong, you're dead.

Oh good, I'm glad you didn't sit on that chair! I'll bet that's a stolen bike down there.
