The Other Yonge Street

- EvilGentleman - Sunday, May 7th, 2006 : goo

Once the capital of Canada and a major center of shipbuilding, the hometown of Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. MacDonald is better known today as the home of Don Cherry (I'm not a fan of his, but I know where he's from) and Kingston Penitentiary. Some of the older parts of town have a colonial charm to them, like Yonge street, on the west side of Olympic Harbour.

I dunno if anyone was looking for Peter's Drugs, but here you go.

I hear stone houses are naturally cool in summer, warm in winter.

It may be clad in siding nowadays, but this proud house still shows its age gracefully.

image 11766
I think this old house has been converted into a garage with a loft apartment above it, or is it a storage area above? Whatever it is, the vines help make it look cool.

Chris Erb: This area has a very European feel to it.

EvilGentleman: 7th May 2006 - 07:40 GMT

I kind of feel it looks a bit like England, but since these buildings were built by the British, I guess it was natural that they would look that way. Perhaps one of our British readers could tell us if they have any similar places near their home?

yeah, the grey houses could be in many uk villages

Wow, I was in Kingston a long time ago and I never saw any of that stuff.
I just saw a bleak, ugly little city. There are jails there.
Next time i go to Ottawa I'll pop over there-it's just a short drive, isn't it?

EvilGentleman: 7th May 2006 - 19:04 GMT

I believe it is 2 or 3 hours fron Ottawa to Kingston, depending on how you drive. Take the 416 south from Ottawa till the 416 ends at Brockville. Then take the 401 west to Kingston.

Has anyone else seen a ghost at the Portsmouth Tavern, woman in yellow dress with blue flowers, blonde and 20ish?

EvilGentleman: 1st Aug 2006 - 16:26 GMT

Wow, that brings a whole different aspect to this article.

Softee: 28th Dec 2006 - 10:08 GMT

Kingston is far from bleak and ugly, it's a beautiful city.

Rod Mullin: 30th Nov 2007 - 20:36 GMT

Hi Garth , No I have never seen a ghost in there .. and I spent many .. many hours in there :) I've seen alot of things in there but never a ghost. Ease off the sauce buddy.

TrandomnesstwO: 19th Mar 2009 - 01:55 GMT

Look up my youtube account!
And I have also been to Kingston, when I was around 4 years of age,so my comment here really meant nothing to ordinary folk browsing around.

Pre 9/11, my father and I would visit the museum at Ft. Totten. It was curated by a man named Jack Fein, who has since passed away. (He met some legal troubles shortly before his passing, as some of you...
