Creative eyecatcher at Periwinkles. Spring & Lawrence St. Not sure what they actually have there. This article has been viewed 2961 times in the last 2 years EvilGentleman: 29th Apr 2006 - 16:20 GMTPeriwinkles... Sounds so familar, for some reason. Is there one in Decatur, too? I used to visit my old fiancee there when she was going to Millikin U in Decatur, back in 1989 and 1990. Heh! I still remember her saying we should go to Wal-Mart to get something, and my response was "What the hell is Wal-Mart?" At that time, Wal-Mart was more of a midwestern phenomenon. But 2 years later, all the Woolworth's and Woolco stores in Canada had been either converted to Wal-Marts or shut down. Still no Walgreen's Pharmacies up here yet, but they have reached upstate New York now. And I think Ames has spread west as far as Ohio, if I am not mistaken. Funny how even in America, people assume that the big companies in their state must exist in all states, although they more often than not don't. Brad: 29th Apr 2006 - 17:21 GMTEvilGentleman, you've really been around haven't you?;) I'm not sure if there is one in Decatur or not. I've only been there a handful of times which is kind of pitiful since it's only 45 minutes away! Its kind of funny how you get used to what stores, big and small are in your area. I always find myself comparing ours to ones in other cities. What always intrigued me were the stores that seem to be city specific. While riding the El in Chicago, I saw several Dominick's grocery stores near the tracks of just the line I was on, so I'm sure there were many other spread around. In Manhattan, the Duane Reade pharmacies seemed to be on every other corner. Don't think I've actually seen either of those businesses outside of those cities though. EvilGentleman: 29th Apr 2006 - 19:19 GMTHmmm, I stand corrected. I just did a wiki search on Woolworth's, and was surprised to learn that Woolco Canada was bought out by Wal-Mart in 1994. I had thought it was earlier. I guess I was in the Arctic when things were changing, so I quoted the date of the last time I saw a Woolco store, which was in 1991. The constant changes of retail empires is a fascinating area of study. So many memories. I remember some interesting little tidbits, like how many Canadian Texaco stations (gone since 1989) used to have restaurants attached to them , and these restaurants had great food and the world's greatest milkshakes, which were blended in the big metal cups and then poured into the tall glass, but they always left the metal mixing cup behind on your table, so you could refill your glass and actually get your money's worth! I can still feel the cold metal, dripping with condensation as I pour the rest of the shake into the tall fluted glass... Man, I gotta go looking for a diner now!
