Hool, if I have some postings that imitate your "ART", I apologize. I take pictures of things that I like and "group" them in certain themes. But I do admire your work.

Jamie, I used two cameras in these series of pictures: the second to the last one were taken with my crappy Kodak 3 megapixels (just the basics, point and shoot) and the rest were taken with my Lumix (Panasonic) camera.

I'm sure there's no need to apoligise to hool. You see something you like and you take a photo of it. I'm sure hool does exactly the same. If you look at things in the same way then so be it. Personally i take a photo of something to see what it will look like as a photo. As simplistic as that sounds.

As for equipment. An expensive camera doesn't make a good photo. It's the human who presses the buttons. Of course there are limitations to be had with point and shoot camera. Rubbish zoom, little or no control over exposure etc. I use one because i can't afford a canon eos 350d... ahem... donations? *cough* Most point and shoots have various workarounds once you get to know them though.

taking photos mainly to put on screen frees up a lot of purchase anxiety about dpi. and comparing film based photography to digital, it's financially freer once you've made the original purchase, and if you are not a big techie (i.e. anything like me) then it helps that a digital camera drinks in more light. i will never want to read or really understand technical stuff, but i got a canon because i believed the lens would be good. it was also important to me that it should be genuinely pocket sized since my slr stayed at home most of the time because i couldn't be arsed carrying it. and if you don't take it with you, you can't take a picture.
that's my advice for what it's worth.

My thoughts exactly. I want a digital slr but whats stopping me apart from the funding of course is the size of the bloody thing. See i like your camera. What i need is something small but flexible. A point and shoot pocket sized camera that will let me control it's shutter/appeture manually. Or maybe i'm just looking for the holy grail of digital photography

no apologies necessary. it's natural to adopt a style that affects you. nobody owns a particular way of seeing.

plus, it is a time honoured technique of learning, doing something in the style of someone else, as a point of departure for discovering your own style. what you then have to do is to make that leap into your own vision.

i like my camera as well (apart from the part time blob on the lens). it is good enough quality for the likes of me... and i have never had a zoom before, so it's all luxury to me.

True Elaine. Although my better camera is not an SLR (I was tempted, but I also know how dense I am in following technical instructions), It is still humongous that the only time I carried it is when I go on a "photo expedition!" It;s still the Kodak that goes in my purse. (I bought it last summer as I wanted to take pictures of the flowers in my garden. I broke my Olympus D-550 and the repair cost is almost the same as what I paid for and 3x more than the cost of the Kodak.)

What I do want now is a small camera that has at least some features. (Was I not pontificating about spending within one's means? Meanwhile, I have a fancy film camera that has been used only once! Groan!!!)

elaine, I love the way you phrased that, how it is natural to experiment using the style of others as a point of departure towards finding your own style. I know my style for shooting Arctic landscapes is my own, as I was always wandering around alone when I developed it, with no input from others except my wife. But when it came to urban photography, I was fearful I was commiting the photographic equivalent of plagiarism, due to my experimenting with techniques I saw here. I feel much better now. Thank you.

Oh, and elicar, awesome pics! I agree, it definitely hool-influenced, but yet I see something a little different, and not in a bad way. I see elicar edges on hool themes, and I like what I see. I am starting to see that even though I was too late to submit my portfolio to Concordia University's Photography program this year, (By the time I figured out what a portfolio is supposed to look like, it was a month past deadline) I still think I am taking non-credit classes that will eventually contribute to my BFA Photograhy degree. I am learning so much priceless information that makes me so proud to be learning at Citynoise University. Where can I buy a Citynoise U sweater? I will wear it with pride.
