this apartment house belonged to my aunt and uncle. it is around the corner from new utrecht high school. it is across the street from the old hollywood terrace. my great uncle would walk me up and down the driveway and tell me stories about wwi and how he shot a german sniper who was tied onto a board and the germans would use it like a see saw and as he went up he would pick off an american. so my uncle spotted this and got him as he was up in the air. then he would make sure the gate was closed and walk me back down the alley. on saturday evenings i would sit in the top window and listen to the orchestra across the street play their dance music. of course those windows have been replaced by the new ones you see. i was sticking my head out the kitchen window which looked down into the driveway and i would spit and then run downstairs and look to see where my spit landed. once i found a nickel there, cleaned it off and went to the candy store around the corner and bought a popcicle. it was like the tooth fairy, only i called it my spit fairy.
