Shooting from the Hip in Astoria

- GGP - Monday, April 3rd, 2006 : goo

Yesterday we went to a friend's art opening at the Queens Museum of Science (fun place, especially for kids), then headed to Astoria for some Greek food. Little did we know it was Greek Independence Day, though we figured something special was up when we saw pedestrians draped in big Greek flags and car passengers waving little Greek flags out of car windows. We weren't 100% sure, but strongly suspected this was not everyday behavior.

I am bravely forging ahead on practicing the shoot-from-the-hip technique and thought I'd share some of yesterday's outcomes. All but the pic of the Acropolis were shot from said hip, mostly while waiting outside of a very crowded restaurant for a table. Couldn't ask for a nicer day to stand around outside, and the food was definitely worth it.

One thing I notice about shooting from the hip is that textiles play a disproportionately large role in the shots, assuming you're doing street scenes of people. Yesterday turned out to be a great day for vivid textiles--right place at the right time.

Whoop, whoop, Astoria! Great shots. I was in Manhattan being held up by the Greek Independance Day parade. Looks like I should have stayed in Astoria.

cool. I like the feeling of being off balance and looking up...probably from more like a child's height angle...I like those two on the blue box...

I lurk in Astoria, just a bit south of where you were. Excellent food there. Where did you eat?

good to see some hip shooting. you should resize the vertical images to be no higher than 450px or 500px, so they fit on a screen without scrolling.

will do, hool! thanks for the tip. you inspired this!
cat, need to check the name of the place. can't recall offhand.
my grandparents lived in astoria and i spent a lot of time there as a child.
i was pleased to see the neighborhood retains much of its character, esp. the side streets, with the many rose bushes and old-growth grape vines. very quiet; energy largely unchanged from 25-30 years ago.
