Theres a in the subterranean walkway coursing under Center; its number is (212) 246-8697. I called said number and let it ring 6 six times, after which a man answered. I said "is this Rockefeller Center?". With surprising self-assurance he said "yeah, it is". For lack of anything better to say, I blurted "just a moment, sir... let me connect your call". I put him on hold and on my second line dialed the number of the phone right next to him (246-8704). Of course, he answered it.

So, to make a long story short, the phone-man soon found himself on a conference call with himself. I can sort of picture him standing between the 2 phones, perhaps with one to each ear.

He must have felt so busy.

That's when I hung up to allow him to continue his conversation in private.

elaine: you do get bored, don't you?

jack: 30th Mar 2006 - 19:04 GMT

peter that was me and i had a great conversation with myself.

elaine: fantastic, jack

chiamattt: You and your payphone lust.

jeeff: 31st Mar 2006 - 04:38 GMT

haha that's great. i sometimes do the reverse when i'm bored in a public place. i dial random 1-800 numbers from payphones. you will be amazed at what you find, particularly if you try to dial numbers that make words (eg. 1-800-GET-BENT [altho i haven't tried this one in particular])

So Jeeff, that was you! I used to volunteer at the Distress Centre. This is suppose to be a suicide hotline but most of the calls I received when I did my required overnight shift once a month were obscene calls. Oh, they were so good at fooling us. Here I am, practically ruining one weekend a month just to give something back to the community, only to get these very clever and annoying calls. I lasted a year, working 1-3 hours shift a week, with one overnight shift (11-7). That was brutal, the overnight shift, that is. In the year's time, I received only 1 suicide call. And he was drunk. As I was told when I reported the incident to the director, "Too bad he wouldn't remember all the wonderful things you said when he sobers up!"

jeeff: 31st Mar 2006 - 05:22 GMT

i'd never prank a suicide hotline. i mostly like to leave messages on peoples voicemail. i did my best joe pesci mobster impression on a brooklyn lawyer's answering machine.

jeeff: 31st Mar 2006 - 05:25 GMT

actually i did that when i worked at the cn tower. sometimes we had to go stand in the lobby for hours at a time. it was boring and there were payphones nearby. i wonder if he had the call traced.

Suicide hotline? If your planing to top yourself when do you make the time for a chat?

Peter: 31st Mar 2006 - 14:19 GMT

also fun: calling the payphone at the boathouse in central park (212-650-0786) and asking how the weather is. its nice; sometimes, you can chat up a passerby for about a half hour, if youre bored. i ask them to tell me a story, and about 50% will actually do it. new yorkers are, as a whole, a much more lonely and alienated demographic than the average. some will jump at the chance to talk to someone, anyone. its odd.

viva boredom-contrived urban anthropological exercises...

I'm going to call the Rockefeller number later today. It's long distance but I haven't payed my bill in a month anyway.

Chris Erb: 17th Apr 2006 - 18:39 GMT

Just called. Had a fun conversation with someone who works at MoMO. He lives in Brooklyn. He told me that the weather is quite nice, told me a bit about new York, I told him a bit about when I was in New York (I only drove through, across the George Washington bridge and through the Bronx). he told me about when he came to Canada. Invited me down to New York, I told him I'll definitely come when I move to Montreal and will be able to get there quit cheap.

He had a very New York accent.

Is that the way you masterbate - with each other?

jeeff: 17th Apr 2006 - 22:31 GMT

it's not masturbation when you do it with someone else.

danielle: 21st May 2006 - 00:49 GMT
