A Trip to Colorado Springs

One of my most memorable trips is my trip to Corolado Springs. My Texan niece's basketball team was in a tournament (they placed fourth nationally), so her favourite aunt had to go. I flew to Texas and we drove to Colorado, all 800 miles of it. Coming back, we have to drive straight as my sister had to work the next day. I had never been in a car for 16 straight hours except for the occassional stretching during bathroom breaks. I don't think I will ever do that again. But here are the memories.

Where Heaven Meets Earth: Pike's Peak, the place that inspired, America, the Beautiful. www.pikespeakcolorado.com/GeneralInformation.htm We were going up at 15 miles per hour, but I believe I had 10 heart attacks. I could not look down as I could not see any road. I had to laugh when we reached the top because on the roof of the car, by the passenger window, were my finger prints. So many of them. I was holding on to my dear life.

Royal Gorge: I made a mistake of looking down while I was on the bridge. There were spaces on the wooden bridge. I could see the Colorado River, 1,000 feet below. I froze.

Thank goodness, they have a sense of humour. This distracted me.

Trust me, you have not truly enjoyed life until you spend a month on the road. Road trips by car or truck are by far the best compromise between freedom of movement, speed of travel, and actually seeing things as you pass by. I wish I could do a coast-to-coast trip by bicycle one day, but I cannot spare the time involved, and safe parking and luggage capacity are major problems. Flying is so fast, but you see so little, unless staring down at the tops of cumulus formations is your heart's desire. And trains are confined by rails, schedules, etc. Yup. Life in a car... can't beat it. Well, maybe a Winnebago...

I agree with you, Evil, when it is a driving vacation, where you drive for 4-6 hours, stop by a quaint little town and stay at a quaint little inn and explore the next day, and perhaps get a good night's sleep before moving on to the next interesting place. Just like what I did in the early 90's. We drove to San Antonio (I fell in love with it), Houston and to Galveston and visited the interesting places in between.

But this trip was not like that. I don't know if you have driven through East Texas, but all you can see is flat lands. (Oh, there's another cornfield!) The oil drills made it a little bit more interesting. The only other interesting picture I took along the way was that of a windmill. (Too bad I was not able to take a picture of the sign, "Finish our 56 oz of steak and it's free!). It only got interesting when we passed through New Mexico.

Driving 16 hours again? Nope. The 13 to 14 hours straight flight I take every two years is more inviting. And rail is good, if you fo first class. The minute the train rolls, the liquor carts rolls (my employer paid for it, folks!).
