Paper mill, Why is it that greed overcomes the need to protect? This article has been viewed 2275 times in the last 3 years Russel Lamont: 29th Jan 2007 - 05:11 GMTHey, Ngodwana is my home town! Guy McLaren: 29th Jan 2007 - 06:09 GMTIts that pollution spewing smelly hole along the road to Waterval Onder from Nelspruit. Michael Waugh: 12th Jan 2008 - 18:32 GMTOur family owned a small farm called Tullach Mhor, just up the road from that paper mill. Built by an irishman, Paddy Webb. Your'e right, it did stink. Names from the past - the Fraynes & the Shaws. Guy McLaren: 13th Jan 2008 - 07:38 GMTWell I never did visit this place, Give me directions and I will try and look it up and give you more modern pics. Zelda: 27th Feb 2008 - 00:51 GMTHey i am from ngodwana i love it here wanna email me zelru@telkomsa.net Michael Waugh: 27th Feb 2008 - 17:08 GMTDirections: Recalling since '75, west of the SAPI mill about 5-10 km I would say. There was a small post office/store. Dirt road went north over the railroad tracks, just beyond it turned to the right went back towards the mill about 1-2km then wound it's way up into the hills. The Fraynes, Shaws lived to left at the first turn over thoe same tracks. The farm was amazing, about 1100 acres under Saligna gum, 800 acres was game farm with a tall animal fences. All the way at the top, I recall there was a fire lookout post. There were eland, Wildebeest, Zebra, some very rare Somanga monkeys but none of the big game animals. Before my time there, Paddy Webb tried White Rhinos, one drowned in a stream, the other got caught on a cattle grate, and died. Most precious were the Crowned Eagles. The house has it's own electricity, provided by a pelton wheel. It had a nine inches thick thatch roof, with mahogony interiors, about 40' feet in the middle. At one point in time, it caught fire and almost burned to t he ground. I have tried to find it on google without much success due to the resolution of the imagery. Very cool place. Here is a pic of the side of same house. Guy, in your first image. That farm, Tullach Mhor is behind the sloped mountain in the background. As I recall the road winds back around the paper mill (l-r). Iforgot to mention two waterfall, as I recall one is about 90m, the other 150m. Comment on this article..[previous] :: [next] |
