Mangey Urban Fox

yesterday i went to my physio appointment on the tube (dropping in at cafe open for some liver, bacon, onions, and chips on the way). lots of people had copies of the evening standard, and i spotted the most revolting picture of a big cull of urban foxes on the front page. annoyingly i can't get it free online so you will just have to imagine it. after my lunch i walked round to the physio's place, passing fuck etc, crap craf on the way, and as i rounded the corner into his street i saw the mangey fox that lives there.
i have seen him before. i stood and chatted to him, taking these, admittedly poor, photos - cursing my crappy zoom. he didn't look too unwell, though he is scruffy for sure.

Guy McLaren: She is gorgeous.

Laura : 11th Feb 2006 - 19:22 GMT

foxes are bigger than I thought they were. I don't think I've ever seen one in person.

elaine: 12th Feb 2006 - 09:31 GMT

they are a decent size, but they can also hunker right down. you can see them at night zooming alone almost flat to the ground. they tend not to be quite so bold in the daytime, in fact this is the only one i have ever seen in daylight, and i have seen him twice, he has obviously made a personal policy decision...
usually you see them at dusk or at night. i have seen them closer up than this, but not often. one time i was standing at new cross station and i saw baby foxes playing. they were just across the track from me. their mother must have been au fait with the partitioning nature of the tracks, because she was very cool about it all.

EvilGentleman: 12th Feb 2006 - 11:36 GMT

Isn't that odd. The only time I recall seing a fox near the city was when I was walking across a train bridge. It was on the tracks at the end of the bridge. Maybe foxes are naturally drawn to train tracks?

kc: 12th Feb 2006 - 14:12 GMT

this is very cool. Why do we not have urban foxes? Do we not have enough hounds?

elaine: 12th Feb 2006 - 15:54 GMT

i think they moved in when the hedgerows became uninhabitable in the countryside, and the kentucky fried children's aroma called them from their country homes. plus, apart from the bloke i mentioned who had killed a whole lawn full of them, most urbanites think them cute and loveable, whereas most country folk do not. they have moved to the love!

elaine: 12th Feb 2006 - 15:55 GMT

and, evilgentleman - maybe they prefer rail travel?

greaser: 12th Feb 2006 - 16:08 GMT

Do I hear the blos of horns and thundering hoofs of the hunt approaching up bethnal green road?? Watch out Mr Fox!!

elaine: 12th Feb 2006 - 16:59 GMT

yeah, chavs on trial bikes, and big black hackney dogs with blood lust in their eyes from being fed biscuits...

greaser: 12th Feb 2006 - 17:08 GMT

post modern hunters being fed postmodern food of e numbers and refined sugar rather than champagne and caviar!!

grange: 14th Feb 2006 - 16:54 GMT

Nice animal , I had a whole family living in the field behind my house .The Vixen ( female) had a litter of kits every year .It was great .In the winter I would go out along the fence and leave some chicken scraps once in while when the weather had been poor for a few weeks. One day in the near future they will put a subdivision in that field and she will be gone .damn urban sprawl.

'nette: 17th Feb 2006 - 22:03 GMT

there are foxes in the city there? curse l.a., with its nothin'-but-possums!

elaine: possums sound nice. are they?

barry: Elaine thay are going to get you.

grange: 18th Feb 2006 - 11:16 GMT

possums are mean creatures with razor sharp teeth and like racoons ( rememeber that rant ) will live in urban area . ugly as sin , with a rat tail ..no kiddin . oh and did i tell you they are as big as a house cat .They are however not as mean as that rabbit from the monty python..

elaine: 18th Feb 2006 - 13:41 GMT

i don't think foxes teeth are exactly 'blunt'... but at least their tails are not like rat tails. i tried my animal whispering on that foxy, but he just looked at me with that mixture of contempt and fear the birds on my window ledge do. like 'who do you think you are? and by the way, you are scaring me (asshole)'

adam: you eat liver?? grossss

grange: thats a possum elaine

EvilGentleman: 19th Feb 2006 - 10:04 GMT

Mmmmm, hillbilly possum stew... "Take one possum, run over lightly, repeat as needed till dead. Then tenderize with good 'shine (xxxxx or better) for 120 minutes. For added flavor, leave fur on"

elaine: 19th Feb 2006 - 12:00 GMT

liver is good as well as cheap. it's got iron in it as well.

i like the look of that little creature... all except the tail. the tail is positively unheimlich - yeuch!

Alex: 1st Jan 2008 - 01:31 GMT

I've just seen one (after 1pm - New Years eve :)....went out to dump a trash, and one were just crossing the road on St. Stephens Garden - Notting Hill! I couldn't believe my eyes....at first I've thought that it kind of very big cat, but couldn't help it out that its head were nothin' like cats.....so I went online and found out that there are apparently hundreds of them in wide London area!!!! Coooool! :-))
