This is my first article, hope I get it right.
Just a few pics of where I used to live up north...
Got bored one morning in late June 2005 around 3 AM and took a walk along the beach with the camera. Here is a little taste of what I saw.

Nice work there, evilgentleman, kinda reminds me of Kodachrome 64 photos I enjoyed taking in the late seventies along the Lake Erie shore. Of course, it was more like 7 a.m. in January then - not 3 a.m. in June. Imagine painting with that kind of light at 3 a.m.

EvilGentleman: 8th Feb 2006 - 00:05 GMT

Thanks, Bigbri. The camera I used was a no-frills 3.2 megapixel Fuji Finepix A330, cuz it's all I can afford at the moment. I hope to upgrade to something better one of these days, and maybe take some photography courses, see what results.

adam: gdamn.. that looks awesome

Here is another one from 2004

Thanks, jeeff. Nice work on the research and the map posting. I had forgotten to explain the setting better. By the way, I like the way you reference the link so as to give proper credit. I gotta learn how to do that.
Kangirsujuaq is a small village located along the northern Quebec fjord known as Wakeham Bay, which is an arm of Hudson Strait. The poulation is currently estimated by the locals at 550. At 61 34'N, 72 57'W, it is 200 miles (320 km) north of the nearest tree, and 600 miles (1000 km) from the nearest part of the North American road system. If you look closely at the gap between the mountains (best seen in picture 2) you will notice a small island in the distance. That is Wales Island, which is under the jurisdiction of the Territory of Nunavut, although it is owned by the Inuit of Nunavik (northern Quebec). It does not actually get dark there in late June, when pictures 1 to 3 were taken, although the sun does set for a few hours, the sky remains blue. Picture 4 was taken in July 2004, and even then, the sky would darken just a tiny bit before getting light again.
It is a beautiful place, and even the most amateur of photographers cannot help but look like a pro there, since it is virtually impossible to NOT take an awesome picture there. This is the hometown of my wife, and she misses the view terribly. Montreal is so flat in comparision. Lucky (?) for me she likes to shop, so she has tolerated my moving us to Montreal while I attend university.

Catherine Penfold-Waxman: 8th Feb 2006 - 14:42 GMT

Wow! These are amazing. I have got to get to Canada.

Helen: 8th Feb 2006 - 17:03 GMT

The land of the midnight sun!!! Can't wait to get up there. My youngest son goes to school with a little girl who's family is from Nunavut and she spends the summers up there. My hubby really wants to go so that he can play golf at 2:00am

Ken: 8th Feb 2006 - 17:21 GMT

Snow or iceburg in the first photo looks like dragon.
Thax about good photo.

EvilGentleman: 9th Feb 2006 - 06:00 GMT

I have posted a second page of photos, titled Arctic Landscapes II. The pics in that page are all from 2000 and 2001. I hope you like it.

is it hard to get there? if people wanted to visit are there hotels/motels? looks amazing.. yet a bit barren/lonely

EvilGentleman: 12th Feb 2006 - 11:10 GMT

adam, there are three ways to get to Kangirsujuaq, but only two of them are realistic. The primary mode of transportation into town is by airline. The only airline that goes there on a scheduled basis is Air Inuit, and I believe a round trip ticket from Montreal costs around $3000.00 CDN, but perhaps you can find a seat sale. The nearest road connected to the rest of the world is 500 miles (800 km) away, at Schefferville, so driving there is out of the question. A few people have tried the second method, which is by sled or snowmobile, but The cost of provisions, fuel, camping equipment, etc would be more than the airline ticket. You would also need a guide, as no trails are really marked and the terrain can be deadly in some places. The final method, (and I hear the cheapest) is by ship. The only ships that call there are the cargo ships that replenish the town during the shipping season (July-October), and sometimes they have spare berths that they will rent out to tourists. They usually stop at a number of villages, with stops being up to 3 days long apiece. Hotel accomodations are usually in the range of $150 to $200 per night per person, and it is best to call ahead, as there has been a lot of prospecting activity in recent years, and sometimes things fill up. I have heard of people arriving with a tent (or they rent one from a local family), and camp near the beach. You may get better information from the municipal office www.kangiqsujuaq.ca

EvilGentleman: 12th Feb 2006 - 11:19 GMT

I almost forgot... the cargo ships are based in Montreal and Quebec City, as well as a cruise ship based in Kuujjuaq. This is also in the north, (see map so kindly provided by jeeff) so you would have to fly there, but Kuujjuaq is a lot cheaper to fly to. For more info on the cruise ship, go to www.cruisenorthexpeditions.com/

EvilGentleman: 12th Feb 2006 - 11:29 GMT

grrr, I posted a bad link to the municipal office above. But jeeff got it right further up the page. Just look up, at the bottom of the maps.

ever ever nice pictures evilgentleman VERY VERY NICE PICTURES!!!

EvilGentleman: 30th May 2006 - 02:40 GMT

Nakurmiik, I miss the mountains very much now, especially the part coming up soon when the ice breaks up.

But I missed the summer heat here in Montreal, too. Nice to have real heat for a change, after so many years up north. It's supposed to be 30 degrees on Wednesday. But I still miss the sunsets in Kangirsujuaq.... Argh, I don't know where I belong anymore!

P.S. - Elaisa and Danny just had a baby girl this evening (May 29th) at 7:34 at the Royal Victoria Hospital here in Montreal. Nuut cut the cord. A really good day for her. I'm so happy for her.

EvilGentleman: 2nd Jun 2006 - 15:36 GMT

EvilGentleman: 14th Aug 2006 - 09:04 GMT

I was on the beach looking away from the town when I took these pictures. The town is behind my back. I'll post pictures of the town one of these days, but I never got around to it yet.

Hi Johnny, thank you very much.

Feel free to check out all my articles here at www.citynoise.org/author/evilgentleman. The older pages (currently page 8) have more photos from Kangirsujuaq in them, but I recently posted an article from around the time I last saw you in Kuujjuaq. Tell all the other Kangirsujuammiut about these pics if you want. Have a great day.

Car Wash

I went to the car wash last Friday. Was good to get the road salt off the car. 48 hours later, my car was once again encrusted with road salt. Can't tell it was ever washed.
