the village, little italy. my family lived on mulberry and also broome streets in the early 1900's. i remember many summer days sitting on a stoop on broome street looking at the asphalt and wrought iron railings around me, wishing i was back in brooklyn playing softball in the mcdonald avenue park with my friends. the sun never shone directly on me it was always shining on the sides of the tenaments. when it was hot enough they would turn on the johnny pumps and we would run in the water. once it was so strong that a little girl was swept across the street by the force. she didn't get hurt but did not run into the water again. of cource we all tried to do what happened to her because we thought it was a great ride. for those non-new yorkers a johnny pump is a fire hydrant.

Catherine Penfold-Waxman: Great story, thanks Jack.

Lawrence: nice story there
