Going Up

- ian - Thursday, February 2nd, 2006 : goo

People often comment on the fact that Houston is the largest city in the United States without ordinances, musing, "a developer could build a in your if they wanted."

No one ever expects it to actually happen.

This:

Will go here:

Twin 30-story towers right in the middle of a block of 1920's single family detached houses, across the street from a major park. No, it's not the first high-rise in the neighborhood (there are several other 30 story towers within a half-mile), but you never expect one to just sprout up in the middle of a single family block. You don't expect to be able to look out your bedroom window onto concrete trucks and cranes.

Personally, I think it's unimaginably awesome, although it will block my view of downtown, which is about 2.5 miles away. Also: no more .

This is how the lot appeared in December, when they first started clearing the land and preparing to dig the foundations:

damn, dude! i feel for you. you may have read on here about 's proposal, which would bring many 45+ story buildings (and a new knicks arena. ugh) a few blocks from my house.

its terrible.

but this is a good entry. it has a plot!

I say continue with your nude sunbathing. They can move their phallic symbols elsewhere.

Jono Cono: 2nd Feb 2006 - 19:56 GMT

That's crazy, I'd hate to have my view squashed.

groovehouse: 3rd Feb 2006 - 00:17 GMT

The sound of the construction is gonna suck for you... I too say, continue with your nude sunbathing, the yuppies in those condos are gonna be too busy counting their money to watch you!!

hool: 3rd Feb 2006 - 00:55 GMT

ian: it is your duty to post photographs of yourself sunbathing nude while you still have the chance.

jeeff: 3rd Feb 2006 - 01:26 GMT

that's a great example of generic 00's architecture. toronto is full of condo towers exactly like that, particularly out in the suburbs. they're all gonna look real dated 20 years from now.

ian: 3rd Feb 2006 - 17:10 GMT

We're thinking about moving to a different neighborhood once we have a real income.

colavitos ghost: 3rd Feb 2006 - 19:34 GMT

Peter, the new arena will be for the New Jersey (soon to be Brookyln?) Nets, not the Knicks. I live in Fort Greene, about 300 yards from the Atlantic Yards and I can think of nothing worse to do with that land than what Ratner has proposed. Boo Ratner!!! Boo!!!

Chris Erb: How much development has happened since?

ian: They built it. Both towers are in bankruptcy.

Peter: imagine that...
