It took about 20 seconds for these guys to consume a big bag of what looked like cheetos.

elaine: they know their business, seagulls

aaronb: 31st Jan 2006 - 10:11 GMT

i moved away from staten island when i was 13 years old. that means i haven't seen this parking lot in at least 12 years. given the angle, the fact that it is behind the toys r us/near the OTB (are they still there?), it's likely longer than that. but i recognized it instantly. thank you!

also, yes. those fuckers are ravenous. the velociraptors of the modern avian world.

jack: 3rd Feb 2006 - 19:33 GMT

catherine i went to graves street to see my cousins home. it was gone. my family went a few times during the summer. there was very little there in staten island in the 40's and it was beautiful country. we took the ferry from 68th street brooklyn. it was quite a journey for young ones.

pigeons are swarmy. i think this is why they get the vermin card

Aaron, yes it is right next to a Toy'r'us and OTB. It's Ebbitts street. My mother-in-law lives there (if anyone feels like stalking or kidnapping her for ransom, be my guest. You'll need a lot of 'diet cake' and wild cherry caffine-free diet pepsi...with ice. And you'll have to change a lot of lightbulbs.) When I looked at this picture again I noticed a backwards swastika on the sticky-out thing on the roof. It is one of the signs and portents that surround her.
Elaine, pigeons are only urban rock doves.

elaine: 5th Feb 2006 - 10:29 GMT

i hate to be a snob, but i am glad they don't come to my window box. they are big birds and they like to hang out, and they can do very big craps. evidently they are not attracted by the 'wild bird food' i put out, or the apples or cheese or bacon rind. or maybe they are put off by the starlings who see off each other half the time let alone anyone else. my regulars are; the starlings, bluetits, something bigger, either coal tit or great tit, a big handsome magpie, and recently the male blackbird of the pair i see round here. earlier in the winter i had a plague of greenfinches who were pretty, but they were trippers and trashers and they muscled out the bluetits.
thing about the pigeons is they don't visit, as far as i can see, once they discover a ledge they move in permanently.
who i would like to move in is the magpie. if i am not to die in a lovely cared for environment, and as a single person, i will likely die alone, my fantasy scenario is that the magpies come in and pick me clean way before the police discover me. that would be cool.
oh, sorry! i seem to have gone a bit off topic!

kc: 5th Feb 2006 - 14:40 GMT

I don't know much about magpies, but somehow I have the idea that if you are to attract them for this mission it will help to wear shiny things.

elaine: 5th Feb 2006 - 14:54 GMT

i will. good thinking! (plus i will wear bacon rind and lamb fat, as these are his favourite treats so far)

Metoo: 5th Feb 2006 - 15:40 GMT

Damn Pigeons and Seaguls!!! We need a National eradication day. Best Prize for the method that does the least harm to other animals. Lets start a Fund for the Prize...maybe free tickets to the world's greatest avary?!?

elaine: my other fantasy is to keep falcons

Elicar: 6th Feb 2006 - 03:24 GMT

This pigeon is by her lonesome.image 8245

Catherine Penfold-Waxman: 6th Feb 2006 - 14:59 GMT

Elaine, I applaud your desire to be eaten by Magpies. But please wait until you're very old. You're a good friend to the birds.
Elicar, Is that pigeon on waterskis? Great shot.
Metoo, I know a couple of guys who trap pigeons and sell them in chinatown (3 for $10, which sounds quite lucrative).

elaine: 8th Feb 2006 - 15:52 GMT

Catherine Penfold-Waxman: Blue Tit!

elaine: 8th Feb 2006 - 18:54 GMT

it's taken me MONTHS to snag that. even now he looks pissed off...

elaine: 12th Feb 2006 - 09:34 GMT

the other thing that i don't like about the pigeon is the way that they have a penchant for looking like they suffer. the damn things live in underground stations, for gods sake! feathers all scruffed up, feet mashed. i don't like it. i don't like it.

Biff: I see a book coming...

greaser: ooooo...he's really giving me the eye!

champ: 14th Feb 2006 - 01:15 GMT

yo that was nice look at my name for the bridges of staten island it is cool
