Upstate 2 weeks ago, during a walk in a light snow, found these tracks. Possibly turkey.

Peter: that lichen is awesome!

Catherine Penfold-Waxman: 9th Jan 2006 - 21:02 GMT

Snowy lichen is lovely. Course, I like the turkey tracks.

GGP: 9th Jan 2006 - 21:40 GMT

I love lichen--glad you enjoyed and yeah, the turkey tracks were for you, Catherine! :)

This is one hell of a site...
Very interesting indeed...

Catherine Penfold-Waxman: 9th Jan 2006 - 21:50 GMT

Thanks! I shall treasure them.
It kinda looks like they drag their feet when they walk.

GGP: 9th Jan 2006 - 21:53 GMT

yes, dragging is what causes that mark. it is possible that it's something else--a pheasant, perhaps, or a grouse. I'm trying to learn tracking from books, but in real life the tracks are usually slightly different from what the pictures show...reinforcing my theory about things in nature being more difficult to ID when they don't move (i.e. rocks and tracks harder than birds, etc.).

elaine: they got hooky heels, don't they? that'd drag

GGP: hooky heels, exactly! well put. ;)

barry: 10th Jan 2006 - 01:50 GMT

GGP love the photos.
