The patrol , ... Whilst taking this photo, I overheard the man standing outside the patrol car telling the cops about an ongoing break-in at a hardare store on Avenue.

For those of you not familiar with patrol cars... you may notice that this cruiser is a rather old-ish Chevy Caprice... perhaps mid-1990s. You rarely see these old beater cop-cars in , as they tend to replace them as fast as new models come out... and there have been at least three models out since these, or perhaps 6, if you could the Crown Victorias they use also. You never see these sorts of cars at all in , you see them very rarely in hip (read: predominantly white, hip, low-crime) outer-boro spots like ... But as you head east, towards the areas that the gentrifiers like to call "ghetto", you encounter so many more old, should-have-been-retired-already cruisers, apathetic cops, and completely absent foot-patrol.

Do you think this is a coincidence? I certainly don't.

I overheard the cops tell the person reporting the crime something to the effect of a very apathetic "...we'll let em know at the station, pal..." before driving off.

The certainly has a long way to go before they even come close to living up to the motto so boldy painted on the rear door of their cars... Courtesy, Professionalism, Respect!...

she realized that there was only one dryer left and so did the handsome young guy as they both got to the dryer at the same time. (him) look, why dont we put our things in the dryer together. (she) hey now, we dont even know each other and you want your things tumbling around in there with my delicates. (him) i could put a bag over my things so you wont have to worry about your delicates later on. (she) how hot will it be for them? (him) hot enough to satisfy the drying time and when its over they can hang out to cool off. and so ends another tale in the daily life of the laundromat.

This is the corner of Franklin & Park Place, the lady in white might be going to the shuttle train station. Is there still a supermarket a few doors down from the laundromat? No I remember now, they turned that into a clinic.

Peter: 26th Nov 2008 - 01:33 GMT

youre right, rich. just up the block, more or less, from my old place at and . seems like some of brooklyn's oddest ride that shuttle train, ha. people-watching around there is lots of fun.

on a side note, i do not at all recall posting this post, though i sort of remember taking the photos. my life took a profoundly cathartic turn (much for the better, in hindsight) about 24 hours after i posted this, so i guess some of the details of those days has been blotted out. fascinating.

similarly, almost three years later, having experienced several interactions with the NYPD, I believe now more than ever that the NYPD's use of Courtesy, Professionalism, Respect is one of the most ironic farces of all time. From both sides of the law, and in both good and bad situations with them, i have not a single time had a single officer from the NYPD treat me with even the social-minimum of any of those traits, much less simultaneously. it would be laughable if it werent such a travesty to the rights and respect of new yorkers as a whole.

If you can see, the RMP is assigned to FSD, not a precinct car, therefore they would indeed have to notify the precinct first. This article in many ways in false, that precinct house has newer RMP's, and this aged 1996 Chevrolet Caprice is just apart of an outside unit that generally does not use their cars in life-threatening situations. Now that the attack on the car itself is complete, it is entirely debatable whether the cops are mandated to check out the break-in. Since they are apart of an outside unit, they do not have to respond. But, even in my opinion, neglecting to respond shows they are poor in moral value.

Hey Pete, people watching in Crown Heights has aways been fascinating to me, that's why I can relate to just about every picture you post about the area, I just wish I had the foresight to take pictures of my "adventures". I lived in this community from 57-74, so all of my formative years were spent here. Please feel free to ask me about any history of a particular block in Crown Heights. Please check out the comments I left on your posts car wash, armory and a few other Crown Heights posts your pictures bring me home. (I'm no historian by any means, but, I got around (on foot) pretty good and remember places). In answer to your side note: I don't know what you went through, nor do I need to know, however, I'll share a few words that you might have figured out already. When we go through things it's to make us stronger and wiser, most of the time if we didn't have these "life interruptions" we'd still be in the wrong place doing the same wrong thing, I'm not saying you were doing anything wrong, I'm speaking from my own life experiences. As for the NYPD the only thing I'll say is it's always us against them, if you're not on the job then you're not on their side. I really appreciate what you do for all of Brooklyn! Peace to you and your family
