A follow on from my last post from Railword.

Someone commented that i should go back and take more photos. So i did. Let's go on a little tour of one of the more swanky parts of town.

I like the optimism in this . Other than that i think you'll agree it's fairly uninteresting. I do like this place however, it's semi-post-apocalypticness suits me well. It feels lost. Once destined for big things. It was gonna be the biggest tourist attraction this town had ever seen.

Undettered by hollow threats, as ever, let's go take a look and see what we can see.

The first picture: danger of death by an untameable arrow.
And that's a surprisingly colorful/colourful building in the fifth shot. Very cool.

!

i love ... you know, im sure few people have documented it, outside of your town. i always like seeing new photos.

Jamie: 2nd Jan 2006 - 14:20 GMT

I like to imagine tourists (and in my little daydream these tourists are naively american) blindly following the pedestrian signs that lead out of the city centre towards this place. Leftovers of a time, sometime in the 80s perhaps when it was shiny and new. Only to be met with wasteland, graf, used condoms and needles. I like to imagine the look of horror and disappointment. I like to imagine the tourists being mugged by chav kids, who steal their shit and sell it down cash converters to buy crack and elizabeth duke.

Catherine Penfold-Waxman: Like in "Trainspotting"?

Jamie: Fittingly, yes. Just like that.

your railworld entries remind me of the beginning of studio ghibli's spirited away (j title: sen to chihiro no kamikakushi). the family wanders into an abandoned park that the father explains was among a wave of amusement park bankruptcies when the bubble economy burst. wonderful movie.

also why i like a lot of seaside towns. the bleakness and rubbishness appeals to me. no wonder i am a mental

Jamie: 3rd Jan 2006 - 16:12 GMT

Not at all lainey, rubbishness is a great way of putting it. I love hunstanton for example. A stereotypically rubbish english seaside town. Skeggy is also now just down the road from me. Seedy and post-apocalyptic, suits me fine. I got a tattoo done there. It's shite but i like it.

elaine: 3rd Jan 2006 - 18:57 GMT

fab. i believe that a seaside town is my natural next move, because where else, after london? but nowhere too posh, somewhere eyerollingly trashy, ideally, with perhaps a boho twist, just for company, but not too boho, or it will only go 'up' and get ruined.
hunstanton is seriously hateful, it's not scruffy enough for me, although it has some good second hand shops. you can buy a deep fried mars bar there, possibly the furthest south you can buy one.
skeggy has a certain appeal. a tattoo, you say?
i like southend and canvey island, and i like broadstairs, it's very weird

Catherine Penfold-Waxman: 3rd Jan 2006 - 19:37 GMT

Elaine, I can recommend Hastings. I went to college there and lived in Bohemia (an actaul section of Hastings) for two years. It has a ton of history, a bunches of art/poetry/photography/drunkards, as much candyfloss and rock as you can eat, more witches than you can shake a broom at (one-time home to Aleister Crowly, reknown twat and spooky person) cheap housing, not to mention a big expanse of Atlantic to stare at.
It has tattoo shops, if you're now in the market. But I got mine done in Epsom somwhere.

elaine: 3rd Jan 2006 - 19:59 GMT

Hastings has a bohemia ? this i gotta see. i like that hastings is *not* brighton

Catherine Penfold-Waxman: 3rd Jan 2006 - 20:56 GMT

It ran along a section of Bohemia road. As a greasy, maladjusted art student, it was the only place to live. I honesty think that I'll return to Hastings one day.
