Dallas Graffiti Writers Busted!
[previous] :: [next]
Two of the suspected graffiti artists, who police said go by monikers like "rewd" and "soler," appear to have samples of their work posted on dallaspolice.com, a Web site that features graffiti art and clearly is intended to poke fun at law enforcement.
"It’s very much an arrogant in-your-face kind of statement," said Dallas Police David Kunkle of the Web site. "They have a lack of respect for the community."
About 6 a.m., nearly 30 officers fanned out across the city to find 10 people who were wanted on arrest warrants. Police located five men and one juvenile, and continue to look for the rest.
"We wanted to make a statement today," said Chief Kunkle, who accompanied officers on the round-up. "We’ve asked the district attorney not to plea bargain any of these cases."
He said he also is encouraging citizens to consider filing civil suits against graffiti artists.
Police aren’t sure who currently operates the dallaspolice.com site. But there are monikers for what appears to be more than 400 different artists, who have posted slide shows of their work.
"They’re proud of it," said Senior Cpl. Max Geron, a police spokesman.
One of the arrested suspects, Anthony Gambino, 22, goes by the nickname "Soler," police said.
On dallaspolice.com, an artist named "Soler" has posted a slide show of more than 50 pictures of colorful stick figures spray painted on the sides of walls, buildings and even on billboards.
Dallas police also arrested the following individuals on graffiti charges: James Stevenson, 19; Jorge Mendez, 19; Edward Hernandez, 20; Dakota Wolf, 18, and a 16-year-old juvenile.
Mr. Stevenson, Mr. Hernandez, Mr. Wolf and the juvenile were all accused of a class B misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to six months in jail and up to $2,000 in fines.
Mr. Gambino and Mr. Mendez face a state jail felony charge, punishable by up two years in jail and up to $10,000 in fines.

wow. so soler could get up to two years in jail... for writing graffiti. geez. seems like the cops are more mad about the name of the website than they are about the graf.
jeeff: 24th Dec 2005 - 00:15 GMT
maybe dallaspolice.com should take down the graffiti 'slide shows' and replace them with photos and contact info for the officers involved.
flash: 24th Dec 2005 - 05:59 GMT

The jail time and fines are stupid. I'm an artist and have done legal grafitti for a company garage. It's awesome and maybe the police should try to think of an alternative. Freedom of expression, but in moderation.
aok-os: 25th Jan 2006 - 12:04 GMT
two years for the creation of art. at least they weren't out there slangin some shit and blstin shells at people. fuck the po. they gotta open their eyes. go eat a doughnut.
freaky wild eddie: 5th Feb 2006 - 03:29 GMT
I realize I'm gonna get flak for this, but I really don't get the perpetual unoriginality of grafitti artists. It's like the "pigs should go eat a donut" joke, it's just so yesterday it's not even clever anymore. Especially the written stuff, it always looks the same. The style, it all looks as if the same guy goes from city to city to city. Even the tags look the same. If the idea is to be submersive and non-conformist, that's totally cool, and I respect that whole-heartedly. But why do the same thing over and over and over again? It's like 80% of all grafitti jobs in any given place fall into the "wildstyle" form in one way or another. If it was so "wild" why is it always the same?? Original grafitti artists are cool. Those who pass the same old tired standard only fall into that very mold of conformity they try to condemn. They always try to one-up the other but it's always following the same tired format, with little deviation from this tired plot. Why not do something ironic like painting a mountain or a tree or something? Now that's provocative and stirring; if only because it's unconventional. Ultimately, the question for me is why express decay in decay?? We already feel the circumstance, we don't need to be remined of it. We were born in the slums, don't tell me that I live in the slums -- I already know it. I saw this entire line of train cars go by me once, wild-style on each and every one of them; otherwise a "fuck you" or something equally asinine and witless. The second to last car however completely blew my mind. The guy did this giant sailboat silhoetted on a sunset, but he had it being drawn by this kid (part of the picture). It was just so cool. It was as if he was saying, "to hell with it, I was drawing sailboats when I was 4 years old, it was more real than anything going on here on the rest of this train."
freaky wild eddie: 5th Feb 2006 - 03:47 GMT
For example, here are some typical sleepers (taken from a page at random). Notice how each and every one is essentially the same:
I realize that art can't be quantified and codified, and that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder', but why is 'beauty' so evidently standard? Isn't that what we are afraid of? Isn't the idea to undermine the machine? Aren't we just part of the machine we try to undermine when it's just same same same??? Isn't the idea to prevent us all from being mindless automatons, striking us with something novel and new to kind of expose the hazards of stagnation?? Jar us people. Try something new. That "newness" isn't anything I've necessary said above -- just something new to you; something new to the world.

"Hey has anyone seen that artcle about SEKT on the observer? "Could a tagger really be public enemy number 1?" The biggest ups to you, your shit is now really fukin everywhere!" ... yeah. sekt is the biggest name in dallas graffiti, they want him real bad. all of this cracking down on graff in dallas is taking its toll, the chief of police is making it on of his main objectives to take down as many big graff writers as he can. sucks real bad.
flash: 6th Mar 2006 - 05:49 GMT

how can writting on walls add up to 2 years in prison and 100,000$ in damage it just dosent make sense! its fucking paint. and to all the people who think all tags look the same go jerk off. thats like saying all musics the same or all of pecossos work is identical. graffiti is goes back into the roman days and is apart of americans history. theres no use juging these brilliant minds like sorlar or rewd _ unless they suck like the crew cf.
SuShI_hp: 19th Mar 2006 - 04:22 GMT
