City Cabbages

One of the many things that I love about New York is people’s connection to nature. Window boxes, hanging baskets, plant pots balanced on every surface -- even the tiniest space has some bit of greenery making the best of it. The city planners planted trees along many streets, each a miniscule oasis in the cement desert. During the summer, these small squares are a riot of color. They soften the edges of the city. Dogs love ’em too. In winter, some become depressing pools of mud and cigarette butts, after all, not much can survive a New York winter. Except cabbages. These hardy and beautiful plants outshine sunflowers and put roses to shame. And if you could wash the dog pee off of them, they’re probably quite tasty, too.
