Seeing air conditioners bristling out of every window surprised me when I first came to New York. They range in size and antiquity, and make summer in the city quite noisy, but bearable in the heat. Some of them have exposed vents made of very thin, malleable metal. When they are at street level, it's impossible not to poke at them.
