that last one- damn... .

jamie: is it joy? is it despair? does it matter?

Carmack: 8th Dec 2005 - 15:00 GMT

He looks like he is begging for a light for his smoke. Perhaps taking in the radiant sunlight. Perhaps being a crazy street person. Perhaps all three. Or none. Tell us, Hool. Indulge us in a brief backstory about this person, if you have any. I realize some some of these portraits must be nebulously brief interactions.

Catherine Penfold-Waxman: 8th Dec 2005 - 15:43 GMT

Hool according to Cat:
1. The figure in black mirroring the pose of the person in the foreground explores the concept of other paths not taken.
2. The shadow person menacing the lady translates into the onset of infirmity and old age.
3. The cigarette man simply burns for a light.
I hope that clears everything up.

(Incredibly beautiful pictures, as always, Hool. You rock)

jamie: 8th Dec 2005 - 16:07 GMT

they really go for that painted brick look in don't they

hool: 8th Dec 2005 - 17:06 GMT

thanks everyone. i first met the man in the last picture three years ago. he is always out in the streets panhandling. he's very cheerful. the first time i met him i asked him to pose for a project i was doing. i had no idea he had such enormous hands.

inconduit.com/image/handsface/thumbs/hf_09.jpg

he speaks in a squeaky voice. when he sees me he says "take my picture?" and hams it up. that's one of his poses. i gave him five bucks.

Peter: awesome, hool.

jeeff: 8th Dec 2005 - 18:30 GMT

i think they paint the bricks to disguise the fact that all the buildings are crumbling.

jack: 9th Dec 2005 - 01:00 GMT

1-the figure in black is a private eye following the guy with the bag with green stripes. he has stolen the bag from the old guy who is begging God for the safe return of his pet rattlesnake in the bag. the lady is an undercover agent for the daughters of the american revolution and is secretly listening to jimmy swaggart.

Peter: 9th Dec 2005 - 04:40 GMT

in a world where anyone would keep a pet rattlesnake, work as an agentfor the DAR or actually listen to jimmy swaggart, i suppose anything is possible, eh?
