Roman Candy Man
Browsing articles by Edwardbranley - [previous] :: [next]
The Roman Candy Man has been a New Orleans fixture for generations. I've seen Sam Cortese's wagon (there are actually several of them) in almost every neighborhood in the city, from the French Quarter to even out at the end of my street in suburban Metairie. You can also find Roman Candy at JazzFest and other fairs/festivals all year long. The wagons used to be mule-powered, and occasionally you'll see one in the Quarter still pulled by a mule. Roman Candy is hand-pulled taffy that comes in three flavors, chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. It's 75 cents a stick as you can see from the wagon. This is a post-Katrina photo, a welcome sign of the return of the little things in the city. Does the candy truck have a jingle, like an ice cream van?
