Roman Candy Man

The Roman Man has been a New Orleans fixture for generations. I've seen Sam Cortese's wagon (there are actually several of them) in almost every neighborhood in the city, from the French Quarter to even out at the end of my street in suburban Metairie. You can also find Roman Candy at JazzFest and other fairs/festivals all year long. The wagons used to be mule-powered, and occasionally you'll see one in the Quarter still pulled by a mule.

Roman Candy is hand-pulled taffy that comes in three flavors, chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. It's 75 cents a stick as you can see from the wagon. This is a post-Katrina photo, a welcome sign of the return of the little things in the city.

Great picture. And I'm glad to see a bit of normalcy return. Does the candy truck have a jingle, like an ice cream van?

When can we see the mule pulling the cart?
Let us know, as the kids would like to see it in person! With the real Mule. They have seen the truck! Thanks

I love the Roman candy man. Its one of the first things i get whenever I go to the zoo. I also see him on Napolean for Mardi Gras. This is my favorite candy of all time. Roman candy was there when my dad was growing up, I can only hope its here when my children are growing up. This is truly a New Orleans tradition!

Alright, I ran across this site from craigs list randomly, but I have been meaning to get this off my chest. What the hell is wrong with graff today? There is some cool work out there but by and large...
