the ground floor of the buildiong also makes sort of a smily , eh?

elaine: that wants doing up, that does. verry bleak

elaine: 16th Nov 2005 - 17:19 GMT

yes it does, but all those n shaped windows make it look a bit glum

Peter: 16th Nov 2005 - 17:20 GMT

the whole area is bleak...strangely underpopulated and netherworldish. the kind of liminal zone that's harder and harder to come by our neck of the woods these days. By the way, in your shot, Peter, on the right, there's a bit of graf I like and here's some more. Any info on this artist?

the character is by boner (as says the tag to its right) and the tag above is phonoh...

How cool. Thanks! I need to train my eyes to read these tags better...I try, but I appreciate the help with translation!

Peter: its an acquired skill ;)

it's like birdwatching...you have to really learn HOW to look in a particular way. you teach your eyes to look at/for certain things and to "read" the bird quickly, before it's gone. this makes me think of that. and, while I am at it, resonates with one of my favorite homespun theories, that the less something moves, the harder it is to identify. That is, IDing birds is easier than IDing plants and MUCH easier than IDing rocks (and graf tags).

elaine: that's an excellent theory

Peter: 16th Nov 2005 - 18:56 GMT

when i read them, i try to follow the "handstyle", or the movements one would make to write the tag. because its made to be hasty and easily reproducable, there are often shortcuts that are universally employeed, and once you learn to see them, otherwise obscured letters become clear. sort of like the end of the "N" into the lowercase "e" above, or the top of the "R" into the downstroke of the "R".

try to imagien spraying that tag on a wall, and let your eyes trace the path of the paint.

that helps some :)

i see it! that's a good mind-eye coordination technique!

it is kinda like birds. After looking at the page full of Boners, seems like you could just catch the shape and make a guess...I've always liked that brick building, feels like an outpost. I imagine the town bank in the Old West. And then there's the shootout, and the handy disposal across the block. Or perhaps in the Gowanus canal, down the street.

it IS a great building; a true stand-alone, an anomaly.
and nice to see these additional boners.
