in . The here don't trick or treat from house to house, they go from store to store. My usual 20 minute home took an hour tonight because I had to get these shots, especially the kids getting at the . All the little princesses and scream ghouls were running up and down , with their parents in tow. The costumes ranged from elaborate, store bought to cobbled together from the closet.

I sat on the steps of my friend Illona's house with her first carved . We waited for kids with a cauldron of eyeballs. Only three kids happened by, and we filled their pockets with chocolate. I doubt they'll come down from their sugar high until Friday.

Very nice pictures again but I'm still out on children demanding "gifts" What kind of education is this for them ?

Hello Mum, just because we only had old pennies to suck on doesn't mean that other children shouldn't enjoy themselves. This is America! It's more delicious here. If you hadn't made us sweep chimneys, Ian and I would have known the wonder of chocolate. Is it too late to have child services take us?

nice, that mix of blurriness and focus. Enjoyed that kid's smile in #2. I watched a guy on the subway last night carefully adjusting his jacket to reveal his t-shirt, which said Simon Says You Suck. I didn't know if it was a Special Outfit or Everydaywear. Was Halloween always this big a production? Sheer marketing, or the joy and relief of parading scary things you aren't actually afraid of?

new yorkers love halloween cause its a chance to be stupid, dress up, and generally do all the stuff you cant do on other days, from eating candy to dressing wierd to tossing eggs, heh.

i love the shot of the trick-or-treaters hitting the liquor store. thats classic! :)

holoween is an ancient religious custom that shooed away evil spirits. it was for a remembrence of all those who died but to let their spirits go to GOD. children dressed up in costumes to scare away spirits. they would go house to house to keep evil spirits away and the people would give them treats to thank them. those who gave no treats would be punished in some sort of childish manner. such as throwing powder at them. in my time it was customary to fill a bag with dog shit and burn it and ring the people's doorbell. they would come out and stomp the bag and guess what ended up on their shoes. children looked forward to this mischievious night to get candy. its nice to see the little children all dressed up and asking for trick or treat. its a time of their life that they will remember always with fondness and call it the good old days. when their lives were happy and things were slower. in my neighborhood in gravesend brooklyn, the kids would stand in their doorways and each one would take turns to run out into the street, screeming and screeching to scare each other. then we would descend upon our neighbors who made believe they were scared and gave us candy. then we had a bonfire in an empty lot and ran around screeming. it was fun. it was the good old days when life was a little slower.

Maria: i LOVE holoween!! its the best holiday ever!

I want to go trick or treating at the liquor store!

Catherine Penfold-Waxman: 28th Oct 2006 - 13:45 GMT

The liquor store is always a treat.
Yesterday at work I dressed up as Fidel Castro. Tonight I'm wearing a fantastic witch costume. And Monday I'm going to be Devil Debbie Reynolds. I'm going to a dinner party and I'm making a cake which is disguised as a cat litter tray. I'm not sure what I'll be on Halloween itself, whatever worked best, I suppose. I loooove Haloween.
