Slice of Grand Central
[previous] :: [next]I've been tying to get a decent shot of Grand Central Station for days. I've got a good view (I'm on the 16th floor) and I've been waiting for the light to be right. I cropped the picture to get the the right balance of old/new/sculptural/shiny. Catherine Penfold-Waxman: 26th Oct 2005 - 18:53 GMTThanks, Peter. If you scroll down and just look at the bottom of the picture, it's like three overlapping pages of a magazine. The photos I've posted so far may not seem to be candid, but they are from my day to day. I just spend a lot of time on the 16th floor. Sigh. Paul G: 27th Oct 2005 - 05:22 GMTPeter is right: that is a good composition. That pic says a lot about the history of architecture in NYC. If the sun struck the neo-clasical structure in the center, it would be a million dollar photo. Urban landscape is demanding: there might only be one hour, of one day, of one month in a year that the light strikes your subject in the manner that you desire. Either you know your city well enough to be in the right place, at the right time, or you get lucky. It's almost druidic, eh? Learning something about the passage of celestial bodies over upraised stone monoliths... Cool stuff. Peter: 27th Oct 2005 - 13:42 GMTyeah, i was gonna say that sounds like stonehenge, paulg. that area around grand central isnt the best for direct sunshine, thats for sure. but i bet working there, she has a good idea of when things look photogenic... i, for one, would love to see more shots. i love aerial views like this... from places that- though you might see them as commonplace cause youre there every day for work- are still fresh, new and interesting for us who have never seen thigns from your perspective :) jack: 27th Oct 2005 - 15:39 GMTpeter usually takes great pictures but catherine you have out done all with this shot. it is and should be a poster for manhattan. i worked for a while as concierge at the grand hyatt and this photo should be on their walls. Catherine Penfold-Waxman: 27th Oct 2005 - 17:30 GMTI'm so glad you like it. The sun does hit Grand Central in the afternoon, so I'll try to get the shot. On this photo, I liked the way the light building behind contrasts the statue in front. The big black building is the Grand Hyatt (I think). Paul G: 28th Oct 2005 - 01:33 GMTIt's really nice...like the crescendo of some drama. The figure atop the pediment is both lordly and also reassuring. It's like, if you get into the Station, then everything will be ok. Catherine Penfold-Waxman: 9th Dec 2005 - 15:19 GMTIt's fitting that it snowed the day we move to our uptown office. So this is the last shot of this slice of Grand Central from this angle. Sigh. GGP: 9th Dec 2005 - 19:27 GMThow great to have gotten this in snow. this is one of my favorite citynoise shots ever.
