Orange Truck
[previous] :: [next]Some time ago, on one of my walks, I came upon this charming old wreck and started snapping. A resident of the building beside the lot came out and asked me if I'd like to be let in for some closer shots, and of course I was delighted. He opened the padlock for me and we stood together admiring the vehicle, now covered, funnily enough with orange objects--pylon and extension cord. The nice fellow told me the truck had been sitting in this spot for at least 15 years, unused and untouched. It belonged to an old man in the neighborhood--couldn't get a sense of whether this old man was still living in the material world. Anyway, I love the color and the mood of this truck--talk about character! It somehow has "vim" even though it is dead as a doornail. I would like to adopt it; this would be my dream vehicle if it worked and if I knew how to drive. This article has been viewed 3673 times in the last 3 years
Peter: 25th Oct 2005 - 18:56 GMTyep. right next to 665, at the intersection of bergen and vanderbilt. gotta love the old willys jeeps! Peter: 25th Oct 2005 - 18:58 GMTalso: thats great that you were able to get in there and snap those shots! thats in the parking-lot area for the construction company, right? GGP: 25th Oct 2005 - 19:09 GMTyou have an impressive sense of the neighborhood, peter--I wouldn't have remembered the exact block, but Bergen certainly sounds right. you know, it's been awhile since I took these pics so I honestly don't remember how "formal" the parking areas was or what else was going on there. i felt very lucky about the timing. elaine: 25th Oct 2005 - 22:07 GMTvery very nice. liking the truck. liking the orange. liking the photos
Peter: 26th Oct 2005 - 15:51 GMTheh. thats a permastone wall. looks like sandstone (sort of) but is man-made. alot of brownstones that were renovated in the fiscal crisis of the 70s-80s were faced in cheap permastone as opposed to terra cotta or real sandstone, as they would have been originally. www.pearlpaint.com/shop~ocID~2999~parentID~2961~categoryID~2956.htm Peter: 26th Oct 2005 - 17:00 GMTits fun to find where the patters from the molds repeat in permastone facades. especially if it sa large building. cause the molds are usually only like 6x8' at the largest, heh. kc: 26th Oct 2005 - 18:48 GMTI found myself wandering around in the Willys Jeeps sites, since I never knew they existed. I think you can date it from the color--which looks like it might be called Transport Yellow? Like the early/mid 50s?? Anyhow, sometimes they are for sale, for around $7000....altho I suspect that depends on condition! (You should buy it!)...I first read it as WILLYA, which would have been fun, too. Peter: 26th Oct 2005 - 19:13 GMTlooks like blue undercoating coming out of under the orange in some of those shots. Peter: 26th Oct 2005 - 19:22 GMTalso: just poked around online a bit and found this similar-looking jeep:
Peter: 5th Dec 2005 - 16:08 GMTpassed the jeep this morning, going to work, and snapped a photo of it in the snow. ironically, it has a plow attached to the front!
