Imagine if This Wasn't Here

I wonder how many pictures exist of the 'Imagine' mosaic at Strawberry Fields? I took this one about two years ago. It may seem a bit ordinary, but I recently heard that the memorial is in danger. People are being discouraged from walking on it or leaving offerings because it is getting damaged. Which made me think, what if the casual snaps of a million tourists become the only thing left of the memorial? For my part in the erosion of the mosaic, I left my coffee can of pennies. I was actually looking for a homeless guy to give it to, but of course, there's never one around when you need them. I was taking my Lennon-loving Mum to see the Dakota and Strawberry Fields and I thought that I’d provide alms for the poor on the way. 30 blocks later, my arms were 3 inches longer and my Mum refused to carry me. I expect that Lennon would have preferred a joint, but at least he could buy one with the pennies. I so wanted a picture of the mosaic without all the flower offerings. I wanted to remove all the flowers, take my pictures, then put the flowers back, but I didn't want to piss off any of the aging hippies sitting around there. So I took my photos, with flowers, then continued my walk of Central Park. C'est la vie! Robert: 4th Nov 2009 - 23:29 GMT
