Toronto Night

i went for a long, long walk tonight.

image 5775
^ the variety store down the street from my place. it always makes me think of peter's .

image 5776
^ dovercourt and queen. this building is a church community centre or a concert hall or something. a starbucks is going in across the street. i am not amused.

image 5777
^ it's not a but it has character.

image 5778
^ heavy traffic on the lakeshore even at 11pm on a thursday.

image 5779
^ it's made of beer caps. this is on the side of the 'canada' souvenir shop at the harbourfront centre. a guy (in a bar) recently said to me, "patriotism is a disease."

image 5780
^ a streetcar waits to cross a lonely stretch of the lakeshore, underneath the gardiner expressway. the gardiner acts as a kind of psychic barrier dividing the waterfront from the rest of the city. they've been trying to rid of it for decades.

image 5781
^ the entrance to one of the posh condo buildings along queen's quay (pronounced "key"), fronting the pristine (!) waters of lake ontario.

image 5782
^ the facade of the venerable royal york hotel, once toronto's tallest building and still one of the ritziest hotels.

image 5783
^ from the roof of a massive parking garage by the expressway. the condos are so big and yet silent and ethereal. a few years ago this was all just contaminated "brown land" left over from the industrial past.

image 5784
^ i see this view each time i come back from visiting my hometown and every time i stare.

and the 'etherial bulk' one reminds me of kc's 'graf exit' the way the lights from the windows in the background and the foreground in the right hand of the picture flatten the view and make the front building look transparent

nice. s always result in the best photos

Catherine Penfold-Waxman: 21st Oct 2005 - 13:47 GMT

Wow! I love these! The one of the entrance to the posh building with the perspective in lights is great.

Peter: 21st Oct 2005 - 15:59 GMT

sweet! im always a sucker for the trolly photos, heh.

that last photo is breathtaking, with the elevated roadways and buildings. it reminds me of the RenCen in ... there are some photos here, but i cant link em. theyre the old-school citynoise format that doesnt allow easy linkage, heh.

the transition from one kind of neighborhood/aura to another is just amazing; i enjoyed this thoroughly. that first image in particular delivers a wonderfully moody sensation.

Peter: 21st Oct 2005 - 17:25 GMT

that first photo looks like it could be on any corner in brooklyn... if brooklyn were *alot* cleaner :)

Peter: 21st Oct 2005 - 17:28 GMT

the brooklyn-queens-expressway is elevated through alot of south brooklyn, and separates it from the harbor, very similar to the gardiner... interesting...

image 5788

Peter: oh, also: any shots of lake ontario?

jeeff: 21st Oct 2005 - 17:43 GMT

i think the waterfront expressway was a convention of the post-war urban planning system. stupid urban planners. i remember someone else posted an article about a raised highway cutting through... seattle? portland? but i can't find the article.

no shots of the lake this time. at night it's just a big black void.

paulg, how are you getting internet whilst on the road? inquiring minds wanna know!

Paul G: 23rd Oct 2005 - 05:24 GMT

ahhh...i am spending a few days in austin, at my sister's place. it's a free room; and you can't beat that - with a stick.

Peter: 24th Oct 2005 - 18:40 GMT

cool. im glad youre sharing your trip with us here, man...

Mr. Wilson: 28th Oct 2005 - 18:49 GMT

Nice pics. I especially like the couple dovercourt photos. As a local resident, I'm not as concerned with the Starbucks. Any change to that corner is good, even if it is starbucks.

The old hall is one of my fav. buildings in T.O.

bosco: where is the first photo taken?

jeeff: 20th Nov 2005 - 20:58 GMT

dovercourt, a couple blocks south of dundas on the east side.

bosco: 22nd Nov 2005 - 03:37 GMT

thought it looked familiar had a friend who used to live in that neighbourhood. funny thing is the picture you took is exactly how i remeber it. my friends and i were on a late night munchie run... mmmm... cain deep and delicious...

yank: toronto,mini new york

jeeff: yank: i agree.

Brandon: 9th May 2007 - 17:13 GMT

Awesome, i wouldn't say " Mini NewYork" Toronto doesnt want to be refernaced to anything other then The BIG Toronto.
