[previous] :: [next]
These are the old "Redbird" style subway trains on one of their last runs out to Coney island, before being completely retired in 2003. The retired cars were scrapped, and dumped into the ocean... some say to act as an artificial reef, some say as a cost-effective disposal solution. (see www.nycsubway.org/cars/redbird-scrap.html All I know is that, in this world of steel-silver subway trains, I miss seeing the Redbirds rumbling through. This article has been viewed 4722 times in the last 3 years Ken: 18th Oct 2005 - 15:49 GMTNot all of them were scrapped and dumped; you can see a couple of Redbirds at First Avenue and 44th Street in Brooklyn. Ciaran: 18th Oct 2005 - 16:52 GMTI also saw a few of them in the Corona train yard. Get off at Willet's Point and walk out onto the ramp toward Flushing Meadow Park, and there they are! Marilee: 18th Oct 2005 - 17:49 GMTi used to like taking the red bird on my once a yr trek to Shea Stadium. It was something different something special about that train. Anonymous (GV-DYN-169.globalvision.net): 18th Oct 2005 - 18:16 GMTYou may want to post these to www.railfan.net AD.: 20th Oct 2005 - 23:35 GMTTHEY EVEN HAD A GOOD SMELL. AND YES THEY REALLY ARE BEING USED AS REEFS, I'VE SEEN PICTURES TAKEN UNDERWATER WITH CORALS GROWING ON THEM AND FISH SWIMMING RIGHT THROUGH! THEY REMOVED ALL THE DOORS BEFORE DUMPING THEM. STILL HAVE SOME REDBIRDS IN THE GHOST YARD TOO ALONG WITH A FEW THAT ARE PAINTED IN CLASSIC SILVER WITH BLUE STRIPE AND MTA "M"! NOW SEEING THOSE REALLY TAKES YOU BACK! Peter: 21st Oct 2005 - 00:19 GMTthe ones with the blue stripe. like straight outta "the french connection". and the M. ive torn off the newer "mta" stickers before to uncover the "M". click some of those links up there, AD, and peep the reef trains. also: wheres the ghost yard? Anonymous (cpe-66-65-32-28.nyc.res.rr.com): 23rd Oct 2005 - 20:59 GMTGhost yard = 207th street. Off the 1 line.
