Union Station:

- Joe - Wednesday, June 19th, 2002 : goo

Union Station in Los Angeles had only a few busy years before the airlines took its passengers away. For decades after, the Mediterranean-Deco building spent most of its days and nights in near silence. The plush leather chairs of the waiting room sat empty, the few ticket clerks dozed at their windows, the polished glassware in the restaurant remained on the shelves. Rarely would footsteps on the tile floors echo from the carved ceilings and the glass of the vast arched windows.

In recent years, traffic has increased again, as commuter trains have begun running. But the place still has a leisurely feel to it. This picture shows the entrance to the tunnel that runs under the train tracks and provides access to the ramps leading up to the platforms. It is seldom busier than in this snapshot taken one afternoon when the sunlight was streaming through the skylights, welcoming travelers to California.
