Aghalurcher church
St ronan is said to have founded a church in the 7th century at this spot a mile and a half south of Lisnaskea, where many Maguire Chieftains were buried.Of greater interest than the ruined church with battered walls are the the 18th century grave-stones,some kept locked in a stone vault.
Headstones like these can be found around Fermanagh and in parts of Monaghan. MORTAILTY SYMBOLS The skull and cross bones is a well known symbol for death. The coffin and bell represent a funeral,The hour glass represents the time running out. These symbols tell us a lot about how people felt about life and death at that time. I don,t think the plague did reach ireland,What did occur was a potato famine(1845-1850)FAMINE FEVER-cholera,dysentery,scurvy,typhus.Same thing i guess.Potatoes were irelands main crop and food source.Landlords at this time respond,s to there tenants who could,t pay their rent was to evict tham from their homes, which were often torn down.More than a million died,some were sent to crowded,disease-ridden work houses.More than a million emigrated to North america,Canada,Australia and Britain on overcrowded coffin ships.I was down at battery park to day and got soom pics of a famine house,I think I all so have pic of work house in my home town.I will post tham.

i'm not so sure, it was something my mother used to tell me, far more likely is that they were times before mass literacy, so pictograms would be more meaningful to people. not sure exactly how i might check, you can't put a pictogram into google

No, I was just jokeing about diging but you could see in to some off the tomb ones, pic 4.the ones with the flat tops,One day we did find a lot of guns in one and we never what back.

oh yes best to steer clear of that. dunno what skea is like now, but my ex's family lived in carrowshee an it was a bit of a hive of ira activity. or so i always like to imagine.

I don,t no if there was much activity a round lisnaskea,I guess a little i would say more so around the smaller towns and villages,country side,eg- Rosslea,donagh,Derrylin,Killnaly,Clones an so on.I never had anytime for Politics even to this day,and I don,t what to no.

I have only bean back there 3 times in the past 10 years, my last time was july for my sisters wedding an I got the impression that averey thing has changed.New houses all over the place.People in all new cars,kids that were playing out front are all grown up and are out drinking an so on.Were does the time go? anyway i am going back for 2 weeks at chrishmas for the firsh time as my dad is geting old, my mother past a way 2002 and i did not get to spend much time with her.The weather will probably be bad for taking pictures. ireland ya

Yeah, but if you get the chance, take some photos dude. Winter in Ireland is very camera unfreindly i know but adobe photoshop can do wonders with underexposures. And dude, i dunno if you're going to skea? but if you are, i would LOVE YOU FOREVER if you would take some photos of Cross Street where i used to live.
