Bad Graffiti Hall of Fame

As mentioned before in a previous artice here on citynoise, street art is hard to find in the Lincolnshire market town of Horncastle. This alleyway, i think it is called Achurch Walk is becoming a showcase for up and coming local talent. Let's take a virtual tour.

image 4794

This guy likes to call himself S. His style is far from sick but this piece shows a certin degree of forethought and forward planning. To the right you can see a WAR stencil from the same artist as the dubios tags noted in this previous article. This was undoubtedly a rush job.

image 4795

Horseface Girl - by unknown artist, exhibits a certain artistic leaning that could prove promising in future works. Attention to detail is something which stands out in this work.

image 4796

Now, i agree that neither of these are really worthy of photographic documentation. And ordinarily i would not post such shite here, but in a town where the limits of street art are shitty tags and random teenage marker pen scrawl, this is a promsing trend. And i like how its getting up n places like this and not all over the beautiful ancient architecture of the town.

poor jamie. it is a tradgedy for you to live in such a cultural vacuum, but you know james joyce left ireland to work in france so he wouldn't talk his book out in the rich conversational culture of the irish bar... ; )

Jamie: heh, check my spelling. sweet.

Peter: 12th Sep 2005 - 16:03 GMT

not worthy of documentation? ha! these are def worth it. there strange and fascinating. i love how the big "s" has dubious 3-d effects. this is the odd, random stuff that no one outside your town would ever see if you didnt bother to take a snapshot and a moment to post it.

im sure the "Artists" would be pleasantly surprused to ever find their stuff online, hahahaha. keep it up, man.

Spanky: 13th Sep 2005 - 10:48 GMT

Hmmm that stuff is ok....but why would people just attempt public art if they arent actually THAT good. Hopefully those are just first drafts and those artists will come back later on and improve on their work.

Yeh those don't look finished. And they dont seem to have much point to them either - like what drove some dude to draw a random face, or a wierd S? why an S? Is that a self portrait? oh the questions!!

Peter: thats why its so amusing/interesting, spanks.

jeeff: everyone's gotta start somewhere.

in fact that reminds me of a spot here in toronto i call the 'bad graffiti hall of fame'. it's an ultra-secluded spot way back in a maze of alleys near the university campus. it's so safe that it seems to draw all the beginners out to practise their "skillz". i'll have to go track it down with my camera. last time i went looking for the spot i couldn't even find it.

Peter: 13th Sep 2005 - 18:44 GMT

i would love to see some photos of that spot, jeeff...

Jamie: 7th Jun 2006 - 00:24 GMT

yes, me too. what are you playing at jeeff. get busy

jeeff: 7th Jun 2006 - 02:59 GMT

i've been trying to find it but it's like it has disappeared. i remember the area where we saw it, but it was late at night and i just can't find it again. weird because it was a very characteristic spot - an arched alley painted white. maybe i dreamt it.

Jamie: 10th Jun 2006 - 21:45 GMT

I never suggested that the war tags and these pieces were by the same person. Must be pretty freaky to see these live on the internet, as Peter predicted

"im sure the "Artists" would be pleasantly surprused to ever find their stuff online, hahahaha. keep it up, man."

I'm in my mid twenties. I just take photos of stuff that catches my eye. Take a look through this site, i've been posting stuff here for years. Keep up the good work "S"

Jamie: 11th Jun 2006 - 09:04 GMT

I'm glad you like the site. I think on the whole, although the consensus is that these pieces aren't great, there was a lot of positivity in the comments here. It's always cool when random people stumble across stuff that's local to them here on citynoise. But so far, the horncastle stuff's been from a single perspective. Mine. Maybe you'll post some of your own stuff?

"S": 11th Jun 2006 - 12:07 GMT

I would post some of my own stuff...but, i haven't do anything in a while (and i have no pictures anyway) i have pictures of my drawings and sculpture, but they have nothing to do with this site! lol
"S".....
