The guy in the first photo looks strangely like The Whittlesey Straw Bear which is the centre-piece of bizarre pagan ritual that takes place every year in the small market town i grew up in. You can read about it at www.strawbear.org.uk
but basically some guy dresses up in a straw suit and is paraded around town from pub to pub and is beaten with sticks whilst morris dancers dance their merry pagan dances. They have bells tied to their clothes and bang sticks togetheras they dance with brightly pained faces. It's all quite quite sinister.
