montreal, canada:

i went to mutek this past weekend in montreal. i didn't have too much time to walk around the city. here are a few scenes.

downtown montreal is absolutely saturated with beautiful intracite graf like this. i only photographed a few walls. it's _everywhere, in plain view of major streets, and i mean everywhere.

i love montreal. old, gritty, and real.

those two pictures on the orangy wall are from under pressure 2001, and were perfectly legal. just to let you know.

Interesting shots of the skeleton of the old porn theatre (was it the Eve or the Picadilly? I can't remember. Never went in one of those places in my life). It really helps to illustrate the decline in the section of Saint-Laurent Street south of Sainte-Catherine and north of Chinatown. I drove past that area a few weeks ago, and it still looks exactly the same as the pics (plus some snow, of course) I can only assume the I-beams were left in place in order to prevent the adjacent buildings from collapsing. A renewal/restoration is seriously needed in that area. It is presently a hodgepodge of trendy nightclubs, seedy bars, punks, bikers, prostitutes and junkies, as well as a major gathering point of teenage runaways. Interestingly, this building is 100 metres (and around the corner) from Club Metropolis, which has been used as a location for many Quebec Liberal Party leadership conferences. The stark contrasts in the area need to be captured and posted. Maybe I should head down there in the next week or two with my camera. Now that I think about it, the contrasts here are every bit as good as in Hollywood, where I can recall seeing a homeless guy sleeping in the doorway of a polished-chrome-and-glass-decorated Mercedes dealership.

most old industrial/artist neighborhoods are turning into hip night spots which are then turning into outrageously priced lofts.. or so its seemed for the past few years

Hmmmm, I live in Montreal, and Westmount is the richest place there in case you don't know.
