Flamelets on Vanderbilt Ave

- GGP - Tuesday, August 2nd, 2005 : goo

[previous] :: [next]

Last night, on my journey in search of Pet Bird stickers, I came upon a mini-mini-drama on Vanderbilt Avenue and Bergen Street: a fire in a garbage can.image 4020

Just as I was preparing to cross the street to get a decent shot of the flames, this fire truck rolled up to put matters to rights.image 4021

The firefighters leapt out of the truck in full regalia.image 4022

Folks emerged from the nearby stores (and peeked from a window or two) to see what was going on.image 4023

The firefighters drenched the flames and that was that. (Note Pet Bird sticker on lamp post behind the garbage can!!)image 4024

Smiles all around; this was a pleasant, easy gig for the guys.image 4025

After they left, I shot the remains.image 4026

Another highly gratifying walk in the Nation of Brooklyn!image 4027

! i love this entry, and yeah, especially the fact that it reads like a narrative/documentary, heh. good job!

i always get a huge kick out of seeing my own neighborhood on here... its like seeing it through other people's eyes, and i'm always discovering new things through other people's photos.

thanks again, ggp!

jeeff: clearly... pet bird is an arsonist!

Catherine Jung: 1st Feb 2006 - 07:35 GMT

To the two people above, I lived on Vanderbilt Ave & Bergen in the 40's 50's and 60's.
and Between St. Marks and Bergen there was old Joe Barker's Deli, Joe DiMaso's grocery store, Joe Mormile's candy store, and Mike labetta's barber shop. Some more names you might know: Joe the butcher,Joe Matteo's, Joe the Iceman, (all Vanderbilt Ave) the Pinone's, the Dellabella's also I know Joseph Tardo, Do you remember Chicky (chick a boom) all Bergen street. and many more, there are alot of Joe's, on St Marks Joe Pepitone etc. I don't believe I know the Sidotis at lease the name. Alot of people passed away.

i lived on Pacific St. Right across from St. Joe`s. Was baptized there...made my communion there and made my confirmation there. It was so sad to see what happened to my former church and the school i loved so much.
My mother grew up in the area. She remembers the Dellabellas as well as chicky boom boom ( i remember her too) I remember Boeses and Alio`s candy store as well as Pepitone`s Restaurant on the corner of Vanderbilt and Pacific. How I miss the old neighborhood. Lots of good memories there

The Stoop

It's odd, but the stoop is quite a social device. I live in one of the quickly gentrifying sections of southwest Spanish Harlem; there, the stoop is one of the only legitimate areas of socially equal ground. All over the...
