seduced by the lure of this building basking in the , we were drawn towards what turned out to be an alley i didn't know about secreted in the armpit of the oval, where i found the egg man, and which i had always viewed as not being a cut through

image 3507

well i was wrong. and look what i found lurking there (not my friend philip, i had found him already, no, the orange thing that is also opposite the .

image 3506

this is the first time i have successfully used the automatic in photoshop. it's quick, i'll say that for it

;)
hit advanced blending next time to get rid of the wrinkles :)

but i do like the red monster a lot

elaine: 13th Jul 2005 - 06:46 GMT

ta, i will look out for that. i am fond of him too, i took the one i just added to sixy trolls ages ago, but for some reason never posted it til now, and then suddenly this one - it's like the universe speaks through him and drew me to him.. or am i over egging it?

elaine: 13th Jul 2005 - 07:18 GMT

ok, done. is some improvement, though now the corners look weirdly folded. obviously all this does save time, and if you were really picky it would be a great first step before hand tweaking

fuzzytank: 13th Jul 2005 - 07:28 GMT

aww now

giver' a crop an the corners go away in the only thing lookin wierd is dudeman with his shirt up over his belly

elaine: 13th Jul 2005 - 07:50 GMT

nice building... i love the , myself. its #1 for photography. that abandoned building looms creepily.

also: the most fun part of this entry was watching the development of the montage from the original to the last one posted in the comments... nice job elaine. i want a new copy of photoshop now so i can do that, too!

elaine: 13th Jul 2005 - 15:06 GMT

yeah, it's good having the time zone communication w fuzzytank, where i am just getting up and he is still online. the last one still has kinks which obviously would be easy enough to iron out. i like the corve of it, which of course it doesn't have in reality, makes it look like it was a fisheye

Peter: 13th Jul 2005 - 15:07 GMT

ahh, you can straighten that out in pshop too, with judicious use of skew/distort...

elaine: 13th Jul 2005 - 15:15 GMT

i just did what fuzzytank actually told me to do. it was a kind of 7.30 am performance piece... if i really cared about it i would also sort out how dark it is and i wouldn't have let philip be in the picture, especially feeling his tummy up as he looked on.. many things!

Peter: 13th Jul 2005 - 15:19 GMT

i think philip and his odd pose add a certain vibe to it. i like.

elaine: 13th Jul 2005 - 15:26 GMT

yer, and i liked fuzzytank calling him 'dudeman' - he has such a turn of phrase! plus the point is that i didn't want to iron things out that much, and i rarely tamper with my pics at all, being a bit old skool about it. somehow philip has a way of critiquing my aesthetic habits, even by just being in a photo he has broken down my dogma. he found the alley as well, really, and also pointed out the leg in the canal. and he'd just finished looking at my paintings and giving me a new angle on that stuff. he is ace and is curating my exhibition. ra!

jeeff: 13th Jul 2005 - 23:54 GMT

if anyone's interested in 'taming barrel distortion' in their photos, try PaulD's advice on this site:

forums.dvdoctor.net/archive/index.php/t-28360.html

he suggests -40. i think that would work for a real fish-eye like elaine's quilt above. for the average photo i find -10 to -20 works wonders. then you can just crop it down to size.

or if you're completely insane, look at this:

www.vector.org.uk/archive/v201/cliff201.htm

elaine: 14th Jul 2005 - 06:00 GMT

well, obviously i looked at the insane one first, but it's really insane, so then i tried downloading the gizmo, but sadly i am too insane to do it right and it didn't work, so then i followed the instructions for doing it by hand, and the stuff right in the middle did straighten out, but the amount it messed up the surrounding stuff was too much, maybe i can reset the tool, i dunno, but in reality i actually do like the fisheyedyness of it, as it happens, so that's enough fiddling for 7am...

jeeff: 14th Jul 2005 - 11:10 GMT

yeah i like fish-eyes. it's the regular pics that i usually want to straighten out, the ones with just a little distortion.

elaine: 14th Jul 2005 - 12:14 GMT

but thanks for the heads up, the fact i am too dim to work the damn things notwithstanding, it was fun trying, but not being strongly motivated probably aided in my failure - if i want to do something to a picture and it's in my mind's eye how i want it then i can usually hooch up enough skills to get the cheat on it

Peter: 14th Jul 2005 - 14:07 GMT

thanks for those links, jeeff. that stuff is really interesting...

jeeff: 14th Jul 2005 - 22:11 GMT

np. the vector link is totally incomprehensible to me. it was the first hit on my websearch. scared the shit out of me.

elaine: 15th Jul 2005 - 05:29 GMT

numberrs. they make me all tired and homeresque, and not in a philosophical way
